Nursery/P1 Transition

28.03.11

Welcome to Primary 1!

The Nursery children have been coming into the P1 classroom last week and this week to find out about “Learning Areas.”

There are lots of different “Learning Areas” in the classroom where the children can explore, practise and extend their learning. The children have to look at the choosing board and decide which Learning Areas they can go to that day. The choosing board is changed every day to make sure that everyone gets a turn to play at every area over the week.

Everyone has been given a Primary 1 “Buddy” to help them find out where they can play and what to do in each Learning Area. The Primary 1′s have been very helpful and sensible in their new role!

We had an exciting morning! We had the Primary 1 classroom to ourselves! (The Primary 1′s did outdoor gym with Mrs Munro and Mrs McWilliams.)

Mrs Jamieson had a little basket of things we will need when we are in Primary 1. We took them out of the basket and laid them on the floor to talk about them.

There were some photos of learning areas, a school sweatshirt, a reading book, some pens and pencils, a school dinner plate, a carton of milk and a gym kit! Maybe you could tell a grown-up about this picture?

Next, we did some work at the desks. We felt like real Primary 1 children!

In Primary 1 we work hard. This is one of our Golden Rules.

We drew a picture of what we are looking forward to doing when we are in Primary 1.

After all that hard work, Mrs Jamieson read us a story called “Harry and the Dinosaurs go to School” by Adrian Reynolds and Ian Whybrow.

A good book to read and discuss at home over the next term!

In the story, the children in Harry’s class made little labels for the cloakroom. We thought that we would like to make labels for our  Primary 1 cloakroom next time we come in to work!

What picture will you draw on your cloakroom label?

We worked with our P1 Buddies today at the desks. We had to listen very carefully to some instructions Mrs Jamieson gave us then use them to help us finish our picture. We used the sand timer to help us see how much time we had to work on our task.

Just for your information, a copy of a letter which should be sent home sometime this week.

Dear Parents,

Hope you all had a lovely holiday!

This term, we will continue with our transition activities to help prepare your child for starting school. You may want to put the following dates into your diary.

  • Transition Meeting 14.06.11 at 2:00.  A chance for us to get together to discuss general information about your child starting school. There will also be an opportunity for you to meet staff that will be working with your child over the year and to ask questions about life and learning in Primary 1.
  • School Dinners 21.06.11 at 11:45. We have arranged for the nursery children to join with their P1 Buddy for a school lunch. To ensure that your child has time to fully enjoy the experience, we ask you to pick up from nursery that day at 12:30. Please let us know as soon as possible of any dietary requirements so we can let dining staff know. We will let you know the menu choices for the day nearer the time.
  • Drop-in Sessions If you would like to come in and watch a sounds or maths lesson in Primary 1, please join us! I will be working on sounds with the nursery children on Thursday, 12th May from 10:45 – 11:45 and on numeracy on Thursday 19th May from 10:45 – 11:45. Please feel free to “drop in” and have a look at what’s going on – you can stay for as long or as little as you like!

Don’t forget to keep checking the Nursery Transition page on the Primary 1 website for more regular updates and photographs.

Some of the current Primary 1 parents have subscribed to this website, which means you get an email every time a new post is uploaded (you can do this with the school website too!) Just click on the “subscribe” button on the right hand side of the webpage and follow the instructions.

Today, the nursery children joined their Primary 1 Buddies to find out about an exciting new project that we are going to do together over the coming weeks. It is called….

“The Garden Centre”

This is going to be a lot of work, so rather than overload this page, I have created another new learning story in the black bar at the top of the page. Please look at it together with your child and remember to leave us a little comment!

Every day this week, a little group from the nursery are coming to join their Buddies for Learning Areas. Last week, Primary 1 helped Mrs Jamieson choose activities to put in the different areas of the classroom and now they are busy teaching the Nursery children how to use the choosing board to help them play. By the time nursery children come into Primary 1, they will know exactly what to do!

Keep an eye on this page over the week and I will try to post as many photos as I can!

Primary 1 are learning about "Our Bodies" so we have a hospital corner this week.

Some children brought drawings from home that they'd made using stencils. We put lots of different stencils in the drawing baskets so we could all have a go – great for co-ordination and fine motor control!

We didn't know what tracing paper was….so we've got some to use! Lots of concentration and careful pencil work to trace a detailed skeleton drawing.

Big bricks and lego to build skeletons…we've also got old (pretend) bones to add to our models too!

What a lovely picture! Always time for a story in Primary 1!

Making a skeleton at the art table.

Getting help with a pinny before painting a skeleton on black paper with white paint.

Our “Sounds Drop-in” lesson was a huge success! The children found out about letter “s” – What it looks like, how to say it and how to write it. We had lots of different ways to help us practise writing letter s.

With playdough

With pretty stones and jewels

With trains and cars

With roller paints and coloured pens

Using whiteboard pens and boards

We had great fun, and looking forward to our “Numeracy Drop-in” on Thursday, 19th May from 10:45 – 11:45!

Numeracy Drop-in

Our Mummies and Daddies joined us again this week to find out how we will be learning about numbers when we come into Primary 1.

First we played a counting game – Molly was the winner!

Then we played with the different activities Mrs Janieson pout out for us.

We threaded beads onto number cards. This helps us to match one bead for every number we count. It also helps us to recognise and read numerals.

We threw the dice and then counted the spots. The person with the most spots was the winnner. This helps us to understand what adding means.

Lots of learning in this activity! Recognising numerals and putting them in order, matching a numeral to a number of objects and counting one object for every number we say.

Mandy played a giant game of snakes and ladders with us. We were counting spots, reading numerals and matching the number of moves we made to the number of spots on the dice.

We wrote some numbers on special wipe boards.

We played a counting game on the interactive whiteboard. We had to count and catch different numbers of balloons.

If you would like to play this game again at home, just click on the link below.

We worked really, really hard!

I'm worn out!
