Fitness Fanatics!

Today, Mrs Jamieson gave us our new challenge…..

“Find out different ways to keep fit and prove that you are fitter by the end of term!”

Before we went to gym, we talked about the different ways to keep fit. These were some of our ideas:

  • Play on the wii
  • Zumba
  • star jumps and skipping…..circuit training
  • cross country
  • Sports Day

The first thing we did today was to test our current fitness and stamina levels. We did a “bleep test!” We ran across the gym hall. We had to run every time Mrs Jamieson blew the whistle. We had to keep running until we were tired out and exhausted. Everyone tried their best and had a score at the end. We are going to do the test again at the end of term and try to beat our own score. Then we will know that we are fitter!

Can you remember your score?

NEWSFLASH!

Boys and girls…tonight I have emailed our Active School Co-ordinator to see if she can arrange for a Zumba Instructor to come and work with us at Yester….watch this space!

Ideas for Home

Why not ask a grown up to help you make your own bleep test?

  • mark out 2 lines to run between
  • ask a grown-up to make a noise (or shout “GO!”) each time you run to the line
  • keep count of how many runs you do before you are tired out

This might be good fun for all the family… who is the fittest? Who can make the most runs? Let us know how you get on by posting a comment at the bottom of the page….Good Luck!

We decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather last week (you never know how long it will last!) to find out about cross-country. We joined with p5/6..as well as some p4′s because some of the children in these classes were part of Yester’s winning cross-country team!

Everyone was given a partner and we talked about the “route” (all the way around the school!) We also discussed how important it was not to use up all our energy on the first lap!

The first thing we had to to was warm-up…our partners helped us.

We gathered at the starting line ready to go.

Are you ready…?

Then set off! Some of us even managed 5 laps!

Logan had amazing stamina and managed to challenge his partner!

Our running partners gave us lots of encouragement

We had great fun…but felt a bit puffed out at the end!

Next time we have gym, we will try out another way to keep fit!

Today, we took part in Circuit Training!

Before we went along to the gym, we planned the diffirent activities in the curcuit on the board. We also had to decide what equipment we would need.

We spent 2 minutes at each activity.

Star Jumps

Shuttle Runs between the cones

Hula Hooping

Skipping

In between each circuit, we had a 30 secon rest. Mrs Jameison and Mrs Murphy… previously known as lesley Riva…congratulations:-)   showed us how to breathe in through our nose and out through our mouth to help us get air back into our lungs.

Have a rest!

Next gym time, we will set the circuits out again and try to build up aour STAMINA by working for 3 minutes each time.

The weather was beautiful again today, so we decided to go outside for gym. First, we did a little bit of cross-country – 5 laps around a much smaller course – then we set out the curcuits. We all worked really hard and Mrs Jamieson had to fill the water jug SEVEN times when we got back inside!

Star jumps for 3 minutes!

We are keeping a fitness diary at the back of our Body Books – make sure you have a look at the photos on the Body Book Learning Story page!

….and some good news! We have managed to get a children’s Zumba instructor to come and work with the class on Tuesday, 31st May – we can’t wait!

16.05.11

Some of us have been finding the skipping circuit a bit tricky…but these people are experts!

We were doubtful that we could learn to skip AND do cartwheels in half an hour, but we went along to the gym anyway!
We had good fun discovering all the different things you can do with a skipping rope. (It was even more fun when we did it all to music, just like the skippers in the video!)

Jumping over the rope.

Making coils

Turning the rope in one hand.

Helping our partner balance along the rope.

We had a great time….can’t wait until we learn to turn the rope over our heads and learn to skip properly!
