<p>This is a great opportunity open to all to complete this award which is a nationally recognised qualification that trains and qualifies teachers, youth workers and other members of the community to:</p>
<p>■Lead walking groups in lowland countryside<br />
■Impart the knowledge and skills needed to undertake a day walk<br />
■Have responsibility for the care of others while leading a day walk in lowland countryside<br />
■Plan and lead overnight base and mobile camps.</p>
<p>It is the minimum qualification required by some Operating Authorities for those wanting to train and lead groups in the expedition section of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. More links, info on operating remit and regsitration  on the course can be found here.</p>

<p>We still have a number of places available on the Student Winter Skills Course. Staying in lodges at the very fine Glenmore Lodge; easy access to the mighty Cairngorms.    This is an excellent opportunity for 5th and 6th years to gain some winter mountaineering skills (snowpack analysis, crampons, ice-axe, navigation and so much more) – or simply have a break from studies and get some fresh air and exercise. Cost is £80, all inclusive. </p>

<p>Note … all the pupils on SOAP from NBHS, PL, DGS and Knox are automatically signed up for this course and are all attending.</p>

<p>Total cost  approx £110 plus your time and effort. This is fantastic value to become a UKCC (<a href="http://www.sportscoachuk.org/index.php?PageID=2&amp;sc=9">United Kingdom Coaching Certificate</a>) level 1 coach in paddlesport.</p>
<p>The 2 day course will run here at your <a href="http://edubuzz.org/eloes/contact-us/">Outdoor Learning Base at Musselburgh</a>. The FSRT course will be run here at Musselburgh. Training and Assessment for 2 star paddlesport will be held at various locations across East Lothian: River Tyne; River Esk; Whitadder reservoir; Musselburgh Lagoons; Prestonpans swimming pool.</p>
<p>With guidance/ observation and further experience you will be able to use boats from the outdoor learning service at specific venues (Musselburgh Lagoons/ Seafield Pond – West Barns/ River Tyne at Haddington/ Prestonpans Swimming pool) to coach your own pupils or indeed fellow staff. As a level 1 coach you will receive frequent invites from your Outdoor Learning Service to assist on paddlesport course and expeditions. <p>The <a href="http://edubuzz.org/eloes/files/2010/10/LTS-CPD-Outdoor-Learning-Programme-LTS-2010-11.pdf">LTS Outdoor Learning CPD programme </a>is designed for teachers and early years’ practitioners to build capacity, develop skills and increase confidence in order that more children and young people have ‘regular and frequent’ opportunities to learn outdoors.</p>
<p>The sessions are intended to support staff following the publication of the guidance document <a href="http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/learningteachingandassessment/approaches/outdoorlearning/about/cfethroughoutdoorlearning.asp" target="_blank">&#8216;Curriculum for Excellence through outdoor learning&#8217;</a>, the six regional conferences in May and June 2010 and the <a href="http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/learningteachingandassessment/approaches/outdoorlearning/index.asp" target="_blank">outdoor learning online resource.</a></p>
<p>The last 3 CPD sessions – Bridging the Gap through Outdoor Learning – are the largest sessions (in terms of capacity) being run and they are open to all practitioners – CLD workers, youth workers, voluntary sector organisations, teachers and others.</p>
