A very special opportunity for Scottish schools through the Cook for The Queen competition!

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, British Food Fortnight is inviting all schools in the UK to create a special menu featuring recipes that celebrate the best of British to be served to The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall at a reception at Buckingham Palace in June.

Taking part is easy! All schools have to do is design a menu fit for The Queen that celebrates the food produced in your part of the country. See http://www.lovebritishfood.co.uk/about-british-food-fortnight/cook-for-the-queen/ for details.

The competition is open to 10 – 15 year olds in all primary and secondary schools in the UK and closing date for entries is Monday 30th April.

Moreover, as well as the chance to be invited to Buckingham Palace in June to see their winning recipes brought to life and help serve them at a reception attended by The Queen, 4 Scottish schools entering the competition also have the opportunity to show off their entries at Holyroodhouse Palace in May!

If your school is interested in this fantastic opportunity at Holyroodhouse, please contact Danielle on info@lovebritishfood.co.uk for more details.

Each of these winners will be invited to a special day in London, including a trip on the London Eye, a tour of the Houses of Parliament and a special awards ceremony and tea with MPs and Peers in the Members’ Dining Room. The Google Science Fair is coming…

Google’s first Science Fair has just been announced via the Google Teacher Newsletter.

On 11 January, 2011, we are launching the inaugural Google Science Fair. We have partnered with NASA, CERN, National Geographic, Scientific American and the LEGO Group to create a new STEM competition that is more open, accessible and global than ever before. We are reaching out to educators prior to launch to let you know “the Google Science Fair is coming” and to extend an invitation to schools and teachers to get involved early in our global competition.

To sign up for fun and free resource kits for your classroom or school (with bookmarks, stickers, posters and more!) and a reminder notification when GSF registration opens, please visit the Google Science Fair at: http://www.google.com/sciencefair

The Google Science Fair is a global competition that any student aged 13 – 18 from around the world is eligible to enter. Students can enter as individuals or as teams of up to three. There is no entry fee and registration and submission will happen online. The deadline for submissions will be the 4 April, 2011. The Science Fair will culminate in a “once in a lifetime” celebratory event at Google headquarters in California in July 2011 where finalists will compete for internships, scholarships and prizes in front of a panel of celebrity scientist judges including Nobel Laureates, tech visionaries and household names.

We want to celebrate and champion great young scientific talent and give students from around the world the opportunity to compete for amazing experiences, prizes, scholarships and internships.  We hope you are as excited about this upcoming competition as we are are!

Think up a new name for the East Lothian Youth Music Forum!

East Lothian Council is calling on children and young people to think up a new name for the East Lothian Youth Music Forum.

Those aged 0 – 25 are offered a prize of £100 worth of Amazon vouchers to help rebrand the Forum. They are invited to become involved, having a say in what it’s called and how it looks by suggesting new names and even designing a logo – on paper or with a computer.

The East Lothian Youth Music Forum was set up in 2007 with the key objective of supporting and encouraging music activities in East Lothian’s schools and in the wider community for those aged 0 – 25. Iain Bruce, East Lothian Strategic Music Partnership Coordinator, says ‘We want the Forum and related activities to be easily identifiable by children and young people. We’ve got lots of ideas for regenerating the Youth Music Forum and we’re looking forward to having young people contribute, starting with giving it a name. The views and aspirations of children and young people are of course vital to the Forum and we welcome and value their input.’

However, they need to collect 250 mobile phones so please could you help them by sending your old phones to Ben and Eloise at East Linton Primary School. East Linton is a small school so it would be a big achievement if all the council could help them.
As well as us getting Activotes, money is donated to ChildLine and you get to be very eco friendly by recycling.
