    East Lothian Inspiring Volunteering Awards 2012 

     Volunteer Development East Lothian, East Lothian Council and East Lothian Learning Partnership are now accepting nominations for the East Lothian Inspiring Volunteering Awards 2012.  

     

    These awards recognise and celebrate the wide-ranging achievement and significant impact that volunteers make within East Lothian.

    AWARD CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA 

    Individuals and volunteer involving organisations are invited to submit nominations for their volunteers whose work takes place or has its impact in East Lothian.  There are 9 award categories to choose from when making nominations, designed to give specific recognition to volunteers for the contribution that they have made.

     

    AWARD CATEGORIES 

    Volunteers can be nominated for the categories of:

    • Volunteer of the Year
    • Young Volunteer of the Year
    • Volunteer Team/Group of the Year
    • Innovative Tenants & Residents Group
    • Tenant Participation – Engaging the Community
    • Tenant Participation – Partnership Practice Award
    • Volunteer Adult Tutor/Group Worker of the Year
    • Volunteer Youth Worker of the Year
    • Community Activist of the Year

     

    A panel consisting of representatives from Volunteer Development East Lothian, East Lothian Council and East Lothian Learning Partnership will judge all the nominations received.   The organisers reserve the right to check the validity of the information given. 

    The top three finalists for each category will be invited to attend an Award Ceremony on 7 June 2012 and each category winner will be presented with an Award Trophy and runners up will be presented with a Certificate for the valued contributions they have made through volunteering.

    WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY – LIGHT UP BLUE FOR AUTISM 

    Monday 2 April has been designated World Autism Awareness Day.
    Why not hold a dress down day, or wear it blue day to raise money and awareness about autism or maybe pupils could hold a blue cake bake sale.

    The National Museum of Flight has a great competition which we would like to offer all the primary schools to take part in.

    CIRCUS IN THE SKY COMPETITION!
    Open to all East Lothian Primary Schools.
    Design, draw, develop, make, invent an idea for a new circus act that involves flying through the air however bizarre, wonderful or wacky– trapeze, bungees, wings, mechanical, engine, tightrope, balloons, flying suits, canons, the task is to make a human being fly.
    Win a circus skills workshop from Aviatricks for your primary class during June.

    The winning entries will be displayed at the National Museum of Flight at this year’s Airshow, Saturday 28 July.
    The winning pupil will also win 1 x family entrance Airshow ticket (2 adults and 2 children).

    Meet The Minister For Children And Young People 

    We would like to invite you to a ‘Meet the Minister’ event which will provide an opportunity to meet Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People, ask any questions you may have and participate in topical discussion groups.

    The event will take place on the following dates:

    Perth – Tuesday 10 April, am
    Aberdeen – Tuesday 10 April, pm
    Edinburgh – Wednesday 11 April, pm
    Glasgow – Thursday 12 April, am

    The Minister is keen to put faces to names and hear your comments on current policy. Ms Campbell would welcome your contributions to the discussion groups which will cover parenting, children’s legislation, the Change Programme, early learning and childcare.

    As the event is open to all, demand for places is likely to be high.  We would be grateful if you can RSVP ASAP to
    zahra.he-li@scotland.gsi.gov.uk  by Tuesday 3 April, with your name and the event you would like to attend. Agenda and venue details will be sent out in due course.

    On Thursday over 100 schools in Scotland will be taking part in BBC News School Report (1000 across the UK) 
     
    They will be making audio, film and online reports on news stories which matter to them working towards a 2pm deadline, ready to upload their reports to their School websites by 4pm. 
     
    The BBC links to their reports and will be featuring their progress throughout the day on the school report website and on the BBC Red Button – SR TV 9-10.15am and 2-4pm and SR Radio 1000-1400.  
     
    There will be a range of outside broadcasts ranging from Dumfries to the Olympic Park.   Schools have been working on this throughout the year and the Scottish reporters have had a number of exciting opportunities including a trip to the Olympic Swimming trials in London and interviewing UK and Scottish party leaders as well as one school visiting the new set of Waterloo Road in Greenock.

    East Lothian Youth Theatre 4 day drama school – this Easter 

    Aged 12 – 18? interested in theatre? Join East Lothian Youth Theatre for a 4 day drama school this Easter.

    Mon 2 – Thu 5 April, 10am – 4pm in the Rehearsal Room at Brunton Theatre
    For ages 12 -18
    £60 for 4 days (£48 for LPP holders)

    Play to performance. An exciting and engaging exploration of contemporary plays, lifting the words off the page and into action. Discover how a piece of writing becomes the performance you see on stage, and be part of the process.
    Over four days, you’ll work with a range of plays and how to perform them – developing characters, staging scenes and telling stories. This is a great opportunity to let your imagination and creativity run loose on some of the best writing for young people in Scotland!

    Gordon Barr, Artistic Director of the Bard in the Botanics Festival in Glasgow, will lead the group. Gordon has been a director and drama tutor for many well-known companies across Scotland including the National Theatre of Scotland, Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling, Cumbernauld Theatre and TAG in Glasgow. During this time he has directed young people in various productions, ranging from Shakespeare to Alice in Wonderland.
