The Princess Royal Trust for Carers (the UK’s biggest provider of support services to unpaid carers and young carers) will be launching new resources in the very near future to help primary school teachers identify and support young carers, a project funded and supported by the Scottish Government. One resource is an online toolkit, and another is the introduction of two cartoon figures who are young carers, Eryc and Trayc.

We are very keen that all primary schools in Scotland are aware of these resources, and we would like to make them available on the GLOW website, as well as on our own national young carers’ website, http://www.youngcarers.net

Three primary schools have already taken part in a competition to determine the initial design of the cartoon characters. We will be doing local press releases in these areas to celebrate the winners, and to raise general awareness of the issues faced by young carers.

We propose to send a letter to every primary school to inform them of the campaign and probable timescales.

School open day – Lawthorn Primary School, North Ayrshire

    Main focus: Sustainable Development Education.

    Wednesday, 15 June 2011, 9.30 am – 2.45 pm

The highly successful programme of Developing Global Citizens study visits to schools around the country continues with Lawthorn Primary School, winner of the Best Sustainable School Award 2010.

Participants will have the opportunity to find out for themselves how the school’s systematic approach to global citizenship education acts as a key driver for enriched learning across the whole curriculum and discover how this has transformed the attitudes of pupils and the wider community.

The visit will allow practitioners to find out about:

    • implementing a highly effective carbon reduction scheme using the LTS online ‘global footprint calculator’ administered by pupils
    • utilising green spaces surrounding the school as ‘outdoor classrooms’
    • building strong partnerships with parents and a wide range of local community groups and businesses.
    • planting trees and growing food in the school allotment
    • the impact of active and vibrant pupil- led ‘eco’ steering groups which drive many initiatives and campaigns. This includes sustainable school travel, waste minimisation and support for wider sustainability education programmes

For more information see: Lawthorn Primary School open day programme
Or visit our LTS Sustainable Development Education Glow group.

    Tags: Grounds for Learning

Please see the information below which has been provided by Alastair Seaman, GfL Programme Manager

We’re running a training course in Edinburgh in Sept on using school grounds for learning – and would like to let schools in E Lothian know about it. I wondered if you would be willing to pass the details on to any schools or teachers that might be interested.

    The course will:

. Explore the reasons for taking learning and teaching outdoors – how it can benefit both pupils and teachers.
. Try out simple, cost effective, tried and tested lesson ideas to bring all areas of the curriculum to life – not just the usual suspects!
. Look at how other schools have taken lessons outdoors – across topics and age groups.
. Share ideas and good practice and allow you to start to prepare a lesson to take back to your own school – looking at planning and evaluating learning outdoors.

The day will be a mixture of sharing through discussion, practical hands on activities and a chance to relate the content to participant’s own schools Full details and a booking form are here:

    http://www.ltl.org.uk/resources/results.php?id=344

If you have any questions then feel free to give me a call.

Please have a look at the information Jacqueline Leslie has provided

    Dear Colleague

You will shortly receive a free Fairtrade Toolkit which supports schools to attain Fairtrade Status. I would encourage to give the contents serious consideration when thinking about school development work next session, it could be taken on as a whole school priority or taken forward by an individual member of staff who is looking for a opportunity to demonstrate/develop leadership skills. The pack contains advice and support on a range of activities which will support pupil entitlements associated with CFE.

There is a second initiative- the SFTF schools mailing list. They send out news and information and share ideas with anyone who signs up for the schools mailing list. If any school wishes to be added they should contact schools@sftf.org.uk

There is also a lot of information on the schools section of the sftf website:

    http://www.scottishfairtradeforum.org.uk/schools

Could those school who working towards Fairtrade status identify themselves to me, I know that 2 have already achieved it?

If you require further support , Jacqueline Leslie’s contact details are below

Would you like to learn/refresh your Signalong signs?

Signalong LogoPrimary 5 pupils at Sanderson’s Wynd have been learning to sign using the Signalong communication system and are teaching the rest of our school some basic vocabulary, so that everyone will be able to communicate more actively with the pupils in the Hub. The pupils are now hoping to extend this training to include other members of the wider school community.

We would like to invite you to attend a 30 minute Signalong training session given by four P5 pupils at Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School on the following date:

    Thursday 16th June at 2.20 a.m.

Could you please return the tear-off slip indicating if you are able to attend.

We will be teaching the first 25 common signs and there will be tea/coffee available. We hope that you can come and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Many thanks.
