More Information on Scottish Book Trust Royal Mail Book Awards for All Children

CALL Scotland has worked with the Scottish Book Trust and the authors and publishers to create accessible digital versions of the nine shortlisted books. The idea is that children and young people with physical, visual and reading or dyslexic difficulties, who can’t read or access the paper books, can read the digital books instead and take part in the awards.
    • Children with spinal injury, cerebral palsy or other physical impairments can click a switch or press a key on a computer, to turn pages and read the books by themselves.
    • Dyslexic readers or children with visual impairments can change the font size and/or colours on screen, or use text-to-speech software to read the books.
    • The books can be read out by the computer using “Heather”, the high quality Scottish computer voice that is available free for schools and pupils from CALL Scotland’s The Scottish Voice web site.
The books are available free of charge. Readers and schools can request accessible digital copies of the book(s) they wish to read.
In a related initiative, RNIB Scotland have produced Large Print, Braille and audio copies of the books.
The web link for more info and to request copies of the digital books is http://www.books4all.org.uk/Book-Awards/

It’s 605 days to go until the opening ceremony of the
    London 2012 Olympic Games
Its 638 to go until the Paralympic Games

The London 2012 Inspire Programme recognises outstanding projects and events inspired by London 2012 across the themes of sport, culture, education, volunteering, sustainability and business.

The Inspire Programme is an Olympic and Paralympic first and offers non-commercial organisations across the UK to link their organisation and events to London 2012.
Over 900 projects and events all over the UK currently have the Inspired by London 2012 branding.  Here in Scotland an Inspire mark programmer is seeking new projects here in Scotland to also get involved with the Inspire programme.  Scotland has the unique position of the Olympics coming north of the border, football matches taking place at Hampden and also holding the Commonwealth Games in 2014.  There is a great opportunity to make sure Scotland gets the benefits of this, Inspire a new generation and build a legacy over the next 4 years.

The Google Science Fair is coming…

Google’s first Science Fair has just been announced via the Google Teacher Newsletter.

On 11 January, 2011, we are launching the inaugural Google Science Fair. We have partnered with NASA, CERN, National Geographic, Scientific American and the LEGO Group to create a new STEM competition that is more open, accessible and global than ever before. We are reaching out to educators prior to launch to let you know “the Google Science Fair is coming” and to extend an invitation to schools and teachers to get involved early in our global competition.

To sign up for fun and free resource kits for your classroom or school (with bookmarks, stickers, posters and more!) and a reminder notification when GSF registration opens, please visit the Google Science Fair at: http://www.google.com/sciencefair

The Google Science Fair is a global competition that any student aged 13 – 18 from around the world is eligible to enter. Students can enter as individuals or as teams of up to three. There is no entry fee and registration and submission will happen online. The deadline for submissions will be the 4 April, 2011. The Science Fair will culminate in a “once in a lifetime” celebratory event at Google headquarters in California in July 2011 where finalists will compete for internships, scholarships and prizes in front of a panel of celebrity scientist judges including Nobel Laureates, tech visionaries and household names.

We want to celebrate and champion great young scientific talent and give students from around the world the opportunity to compete for amazing experiences, prizes, scholarships and internships.  We hope you are as excited about this upcoming competition as we are are!
