Fiona O’Donnell wrote about her visit to our Water Aid Showcase on her website.

May 16th, 2013

Fiona O’Donnell MP joined children from St Martin’s RC Primary School at their Water Aid Showcase last week, to learn more about the project the whole school has been working on.

Ms O’Donnell was shown the wonderful work that the school and the nursery have been doing on the activities around the world undertaken by the international development charity Water Aid.

Each class in the school has been learning about a specific country and the work that Water Aid does there.  The MP was taken to each classroom where the children told her what they had learned about countries such as Nigeria, India, Ghana and Malawi.

The school also held a Macmillan Coffee morning in the dining hall, with Fairtrade tea and coffee sourced by P2 pupils.  There was also some art work on sale in each of the classrooms and all of the money collected will be donated to Water Aid.

Speaking after her visit, Fiona O’Donnell MP said:

“I want to thank all the pupils and staff at St Martin’s for inviting me to come and see their Water Aid showcase.  It was clear they had put a huge amount of effort into the project and had been very creative in the way they displayed what they had learnt about Water Aid’s work. But it was also obvious that they had taken on board the important message about the vital need to increase access to clean water and sanitation in many parts of the world.

“Time and time again, schools in East Lothian are leading the way when it comes to education about development issues and taking practical action to help people in need in other countries.  Giving children and young people the opportunity to learn about these issues and the problems their peers in developing nations experience, is really valuable and gives them much to think about.”

Readathon 2013 Success!

May 15th, 2013

Congratulations to all pupils who took part in the Readathon 2013 this year. You have raised a whopping £335.00.

The money raised will help:

CLIC Sargent: CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, providing care and support for them and their families from diagnosis, during treatment and beyond.

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity: This charity was set up by Roald Dahl’s widow in 1990. It specialises in helping children with serious neurological or blood conditions, providing children’s nurses, equipment, carers and toys, working with hospitals and care organisations or directly with patients.

ReadWell:  Reading and storytelling make life better for seriously ill children in hospital.  Yet very often these children don’t have access to age-appropriate, good quality books which are germ-free enough to be on the wards. This is why, in 2010, we set up ReadWell, to provide books and storytellers for children in hospital.

WELL DONE St MARTIN’S!
