East Lothaian 1st Primary Games

On Tuesday 12th June. Primary 5 took part in East Lothian’s 1st ever Primary Games. The games focussed on the themes of the Olympics: Equality, Inspiration, Determination, Respect, Friendship, Excellence, Courage. The children were split into two teams: Team 1 with 23 children wore the grey T-shirts and Team 2 with 6 children wore the Yellow T-shirts.

At Meadowmill Sports Centre all the Primary Schools across East Lothian met together and the children from each school split into their colour teams. We had a big introduction during which the Scottish Minister for Sport addressed all the children about the importance of sport and keeping healthy. Next we walked round the field in the Opening Ceremony led by the Preston Lodge Pipe Band.

Then we moved on to our first game, Hockey, where we dribbled the hockey ball on the hockey stick and we had to pass the ball down the field and then aim for the little bit of wood that was in the goal.

Next the grey team moved on to badmington. Here we had three staions: the first one was a warm up and then we played badmington against older Children. Finally we moved on to station 3 where we played against friends. Meanwhile the yellow team went to play football where they participated in activities and games to develop their ball skills and their knowledge of the game..

Returning to the feild we had our picnic lunch during which we had     cheer-leaders, dancers and the pipeband to entertain us.

When we returned to our groups the grey team went to the golf staion. Here we were split into groups of 4. We took our shots and then we saw who managed to get their ball furthest up the field and closest to the flag. The yellow team, however, went to athletics. Here we worked at hurdles, the long jump, chest passes and sprinting

Our final sport for both teams was rugby. We were split into groups of 20 and sat in a circle and talked about the rules of rugby. Next we played Tag Rugby and Sharks and Fishes as well as Tig and lots of other running games.

When we returned to the main field, Boogie and Arelene from Radio Forth where judging our School Banners. They said that our banner was really colourful and they liked it. However, the winners were St. Mary’s because they had an Olympic Torch and they won £200 worth of playground games.

As participants of the Primary Games we wore our special T-shirts and we got to keep them and take them home.

St.Gabriel’s Olympics 2012 by P2

What a marvellous day we had! We ran, jumped, threw and cheered our hearts out in a true Olympic spirit of Sportsmanship and fun! We had many official photographers who snapped away on the day. You may be in one these snaps. A huge thank you to all the adults who came along to support us and a big cheer for all the Ancient Olympians who ran!!
Well done to all countries and competitors,
by Team Italy in Primary Two.

A ‘Rubbish’ Eco Assembly!

Primary 4 simply couldn’t ‘refuse’ the opportunity to display their singing, dancing and acting skills for St Gabriel’s eco assembly. Our ‘rubbish’ assembly communicated a message to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as much as possible. Remember to check out our eco board for more ideas on how to be eco friendly. Well done for all the hard work, it really wasn’t a ‘waste’ of time!

P4 Beach Clean

Primary 4 participated in St. Gabriel’s first ever beach clean since we adopted Prestonpans beach. We travelled down on a Thursday morning armed with litter pickers, bags, gloves and a sharps box. Not even the rain and cold could keep us from saving the environment! When we arrived we were shocked and amazed at the amount of litter on the beach. We set to work and filled 12 large bags and a sharps box. We recorded the types of litter and counted up the total. The number reached a staggering 736 items. Not bad for a mornings work :)

P4 ECO Morning

Primary Four participated in a litter picking morning in St. Gabriel’s School and Church grounds. We surveyed the types of litter we found in our school grounds and created pie charts and bar graphs which can be found on our school ECO board. We all thoroughly enjoyed the morning. A big thank you to all the parent helpers and Lee Bryant from Preston Lodge High school who were a big help on the day. It was great practice for our Beach Clean on the 19th of April.

Merci à Claire et la Famille Blanche!

Thanks to Fergus and his family, P2 were lucky enough to spend some time with Claire, a visiting student who is French.
While in P2 she taught us our numbers, colours and animals in French! Fergus was able to teach us how to introduce ourselves and his Mum helped us practise what we had learned. Oh, and let’s not forget little Ben, who spotted ‘le chat’straight away!
Claire then spent some time with Mrs McCallum and her P7 pupils. Primary 7 were able to introduce themselves and translate what Claire said about herself. We were all very impressed. Bravo to you all!
We would like to wish Claire all the very best in her future travels and studies.

The Primary Two Team.
