At the end of term all of the children and staff at Stenton took part in our ‘banana day’. This was a variety of learning around the theme of bananas . We chose bananas because of the link to our project on The Dominican Republic.
All of the children took part in 5 different activities. Mr Wharton led ‘banana maths’ where they thought about the volume of a banana, and used paper, wheels and axels to make ‘banana buggies’!

Mrs Smith and Ms Finlayson (with a little help from Mrs Dogget!) worked with the children creating their banana splits, and writing their recipes.

With Miss Wood pupils looked at the variety of colours and shades you can see on a banana, and mixed these colours using paint and other media. They then created their own banana pictures showing the progression from green through yellow to black!

With Mrs Dillin the children learned a little about the journey of a banana – where it grows and how it gets to us, and whether the way the income from the sale of the banana is shared equally among all the people who take part in getting it to us. This is a useful introduction to global citizenship for young children.

Outside, the children made up different games involving the word banana!

The next day we all dressed in banana coloured clothes and made a collection for charity. The money will go towards our sponsorship of Josue, in the Domincan Republic.

Stenton Primary was transformed on Friday 7th March with a huge variety of book characters – can you spot who is who?
Caroline and Olivia had their illustrations printed in the World Boom Day Short Stories Book Competition 2007-08 called ‘Why were her toes like that….?’
Published illustrators at 10 years old – a real achievement. They are also the only Scottish winners – Congratulations!
