A bit about Standard Grade Biology.
A particularly enjoyable course with a wide spectrum of topics. This is traditionally the main route into Higher Biology and beyond.
We study seven topics over two years.
These are as follows:
•
The Biosphere – Ecosystems, nutrient cycling, pollution and managing the environment.•
The World of Plants – Structure and use of plants. How plants reproduce. Photosynthesis
Animal Survival – What is food, why we need it, how do we process it, reproduction, water and waste, detecting changes in the environment.
Investigating Cells – Plant and animal cells, diffusion and osmosis, cell division, enzymes and aerobic respiration.
The Body in Action – Movement, the lungs, the heart, blood and blood vessels, co-ordination, fitness.
Inheritance – Variation, genes and inheritance, genetics and society.
Biotechnology – Fermentation, making cheese and yoghurt, dealing with sewage, reprogramming microbes.
In addition, two investigations have to be completed (LO3′s). These are usually tackled in school during the Work Experience slot
