Open Morning

Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to our maths open morning. The class were delighted to be able to show you what we had been up to.

We showed the parents how we can make 3-D shapes out of clay and other materials, maths games on the netbooks, fraction games and lots more.

Maths Road Show

We had great fun exploring lots of different problem solving activities at the maths Road Show.

Maths Week

Today was the start of Maths Week at Sanderson’s Wynd. We had a problem solving workshop today with a maths teacher from Ross High. We were given Jelly Babies (yummy!) and dry spaghetti and told to build a cube. We had to think hard and work as a team and after a few tries we were all successful! Have a look at all the different ideas and techniques we came up with.

P6 did some signalong with the nursery. We have been learning some number songs for maths week so we taught the nursery children how to sign “5 Little Ducks” and “5 Little Speckled Frogs”. We wanted to sing Humpty Dumpty too as we like that one! Afterwards we had a look round the nursery to see the different ways maths is taught to the littles ones.

Angle Hunt

As the sun was shining we decided to take maths outdoors and hunt for some angles. At first we were all a bit confused and had no idea where to start! However, after a few minutes of looking around we could not believe how many types of angles we could find both man made and in nature. Have a look and see some of our results.

We also found a ladybird and took a picture of him just because he was pretty!

Chinese Names and Maths

P6 Investigated the Chinese Yuan by looking at the notes and acting out going to a bureau de change. Most of the class were very good at converting Chinese Yuan to pounds.

Here are P6′s names in Chinese. The class have had fun practising writing these symbols.

Lewis made a fact file at home.

The Tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape using all seven pieces, which may not overlap. It was originally invented in China.

Nursery Buddies

On Wednesday a group of P6s worked with their nursery buddies who were performing for parents and carers. The group helped welcome the visitors and sell tickets. They took photos of their experience to share on our blog.

Nop

We used our numeracy, problem solving and design skills to make and play a game called “Nop”. We divided A4 card into 12 equal pieces and then we were free to decorate our cards any way we liked. There are a lot of very artistic people in our class! Here are some photos of us making and playing the game in pairs. We might have a Nop tournament…
