S3 German

Pupils entering into S3 German will be heading for their first certificate course, which will lead to a qualification in Intermediate 2 German. Intermediate 2 languages is roughly equivalent to Credit Standard Grade level. Pupils learn to use the language to an intermediate degree through the study of a variety of topics, which can be grouped under the following headings:

- Lifestyles (friends and family, freetime and hobbies, financing leisure)
- Education and work (does exactly what it says on the tin)
- Wider world (exploring holidays, exchanges and trips abroad, possibilities of working abroad, foreign visitors’ perspectives on our country)

In addition to this, pupils can choose to study a Language in Work unit, in which they have to write their CV and letter of application in the target language, or an Extended Reading and Viewing unit, in which they read a book or watch a film and write a piece of work on it.

While Intermediate 2 is a good stand-alone qualification, it can also be a useful stepping stone to Higher for those who want to build confidence and experience first before moving onto the next stage.
