What is modern studies?

Modern studies is the social, political and economic study of local, national and international issues.  Modern Studies is unique to the Scottish Schools curriculum. Modern Studies can be found in the Scottish Schools curriculum at a number of stages.  At Musselburgh Grammar School Modern Studies is taught to Secondary 1 pupils through the form of the Citizenship course, while at Secondary 2 it is taught as a distinct subject.  Uptake to Modern Studies at Standard Grade level is high and many pupils continue their studies of the subject at Intermediate 1&2, Higher level and Advanced Higher level.   Modern studies is recognised by all universities.
