SQA exams are nearly upon us so you should really have devised a revision plan by now if you haven’t already done so. Your teachers are there to help you with this if you need it. There are lots of helpful websites out there to help with your revision. BBC Bitesize is a good one for both Standard Grade and Higher Biology. Click here for some games/tests and quizzes for all levels of Biology. Advanced Higher and Higher pupils are reminded that Scholar is a very good revision tool too – if you have forgotten your passwords contact your teacher.

We understand how tough it is for you at exam/revision time but it is definitely worth it in the end. Good luck!

Various groups of pupils from S3 have been on fieldwork at Yellowcraigs over the past couple of weeks.

For half of the day, the rockpools were explored for animal and plant life. We were pleasantly surprised at the biodiversity we saw. We saw sea anemones, brittle stars, hermit crabs, shrimps, shore crabs, sea urchins, barnacles, whelks, periwinkles, chitons, dogwhelk egg capsules, limpets, razor shells, kelp, bladder wrack and many other types of algae.

The photos below show 3B5 in action in the rockpools.

The second half of the day involved exploring the woodland area for different types of bugs and insects. Pupils enjoyed using their ‘pooters’ to catch them! They got to know how to carry out various practical techniques for example taking light intensity readings and moisture readings. Sampling techniques like throwing quadrats was also learned.

We all had a great day at Yellowcraigs and the weather was very kind to us. Most of us even managed to keep dry and not fall in the rockpools! Thank you to Bob at the Outdoor Education Centre for being our guide. Thanks Bob!
