ThumbnailFirst we inspected what was growing in the garden. We saw pak Choi, Parsley, Spring onions Lettuce and Beetroot.

Today was a big tidy-up day in the garden – lots of leaves went in the compost bin. We also did some pruning.

Next time – lets sow some seeds!

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: Roots & Fruits visits Prestonpans Infants Thursday 20th January 2011 2 years, 3 months ago

ThumbnailAnother freezing day and rock-hard ground outside. We quickly inspected the garden and found winter lettuce still surviving along with Pak Choi, Sprouts and Broccoli – they will get a growth spurt when the weather gets milder. Back inside I had brought some old newspaper from home so that the P2/1 s could make their own [...]

ThumbnailThe ground is frozen solid today so I had an indoor activity for the P4/5 children to do. We thought it would be a good idea to recycle our class waste paper into pots for seed planting in a few weeks time. The children made these little pots using  toilet roll tubes to guide the paper [...]

ThumbnailHousebound once again – no gritters on the road and the snow is falling heavily. Never mind – here’s a  picture of my dogs, Davey and Maggie – who love the snow.

See you next time – Barbara.

ThumbnailHello again – snow is very disruptive. Today I was supposed to visit the Sanderson’s Wynd P5′s but schools across the county are once again shut. This is not gardening weather! Anyway, here is a picture of Berwick Law under snow – can you see it? The white mound between the trees. See you next time, [...]

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: ROOTS AND FRUITS visits WHITECRAIG PRIMARY P4/5 and P6/7 on Tuesday November 23rd 2 years, 5 months ago

ThumbnailWe started to develop a new area in the garden today. We are making a butterfly and bee border. We hope to make the border attractive to them by using plants which they really like. We identified the area around the Buddleia (it’s common name is the Butterfly bush) as a starting point for the new [...]

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: ROOTS AND FRUITS visits PRESTONPANS INFANTS on Thursday 18th November 2 years, 5 months ago

ThumbnailToday we found out that Suttons had given the school 2 fruit trees – an apple called “Queen Cox” and a cherry called “Summer Sun” Firstly we had to decide where about in the garden we should plant out trees. We had to think about spacing them to give them enough room to grow and also [...]

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: ROOTS AND FRUITS visits SANDERSONS WYND New garden on Wednesday 17th November 2 years, 5 months ago

Today I had a look at the newly landscaped garden at Sanderson’s Wynd. Miss Welsh’s P5 class and I are going to be working together soon to grow lots of vegetables. They have lots of ideas about what they would like to grow. They also want to grow from seed and use their new greenhouse made [...]

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: ROOTS AND FRUITS visits ST MARTIN’S NURSERY on Tuesday 16th November 2010 2 years, 5 months ago

As it was a very cold day today – I’d brought along some things for an indoor project for everyone to take home. I  brought some onion sets and little pots for everyone so that they could plant their own. Each child put a bit of soil in the pot, planted an onion – the right [...]

ThumbnailThis morning it was very wet and windy – so we decided to stay indoors and do a planting project inside. All 20 of the children planted up a little pot with an Onion set. Each child filled the pot with soil and planted the Onion pointy end up so that the shoot could grow. I showed [...]

ThumbnailToday I made a quick visit to see our newly landscaped garden. The one you see on the left. It is really exciting because now the older children can plan what they want to grow in this new space and then they can start to grow their own vegetables, herbs and fruit . Afterwards, I went into [...]

The Cooking Bus tours all around Scotland to teach people in the community how to cook healthy food. This is the first time the bus has been to East Lothian though. The bus is huge with a big kitchen and [...]

ThumbnailToday it was very wet and windy but we still had a job to do. Coats on and hoods up we ventured out. The children couldn’t find anything to try to eat today, they were a bit disapointed. We’ll try to sort that out for next time. Our main job was to protect all our brassicas from [...]

ThumbnailHaving viewed the weather forcast for heavy rain all day today, I decided to come to St Martin’s armed with all the things needed for a smoothie. Well, the weather turned out to be rather different – bright but very, very breezy. I suggested making smoothies anyway and the children were very enthusiastic. First we cut up [...]

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: Roots and Fruits Sunday 31st October – Halloween! 2 years, 6 months ago

ThumbnailHello and Happy Halloween! I thought I’d show you a Pumpkin I grew in my garden this year. It was huge and very heavy, even though this picture is decidedly un-impressive! Lots to make soup with though. I think all the schools should have a Pumpkin growing contest next year and have a Pumpkin soup day. Enjoy your [...]

Barbara McKenzie wrote a new blog post: Roots and Fruits visits Whitecraig Nursery on Friday 29th October 2 years, 6 months ago

ThumbnailToday it was very rainy so we decided to keep dry and stay inside. We still wanted to do some gardening though! We decided to plant broad beans in little pots. Each of the nursery children planted a bean in a pot of soil – a bit messy, hence the aprons. The children could all see the [...]

ThumbnailIt was a bright, sunny but breezy day today. The children were keen to do some gardening. We saw that the Pak Choi and Leeks were doing well but the Kale had been nibbled. The Onions and Spinach were also starting to grow. Before we started planting we had to do a bit of weeding to create [...]

Today I had a bit of a clear out with Jan, our Mum volunteer before we had our gardening session with the children. We needed to make a bit more space for more vegetables. The mint has been moved out of the raised beds as it was taking over. Also the Shasta daisies have been relocated. [...]
