Another freezing day and rock-hard ground outside. We quickly inspected the garden and found winter lettuce still surviving along with Pak Choi, Sprouts and Broccoli – they will get a growth spurt when the weather gets milder. Back inside I had brought some old newspaper from home so that the P2/1 s could make their own [...] -

Hello again – snow is very disruptive. Today I was supposed to visit the Sanderson’s Wynd P5′s but schools across the county are once again shut. This is not gardening weather! Anyway, here is a picture of Berwick Law under snow – can you see it? The white mound between the trees. See you next time, [...] -

We started to develop a new area in the garden today. We are making a butterfly and bee border. We hope to make the border attractive to them by using plants which they really like. We identified the area around the Buddleia (it’s common name is the Butterfly bush) as a starting point for the new [...] -

Today I had a look at the newly landscaped garden at Sanderson’s Wynd. Miss Welsh’s P5 class and I are going to be working together soon to grow lots of vegetables. They have lots of ideas about what they would like to grow. They also want to grow from seed and use their new greenhouse made [...]

As it was a very cold day today – I’d brought along some things for an indoor project for everyone to take home. I brought some onion sets and little pots for everyone so that they could plant their own. Each child put a bit of soil in the pot, planted an onion – the right [...]

Today Roots and Fruits met Whitecraig Primary 1 and 2 at the Cooking Bus in Musselburgh Racecource. The Cooking Bus tours all around Scotland to teach people in the community how to cook healthy food. This is the first time the bus has been to East Lothian though. The bus is huge with a big kitchen and [...] -

Having viewed the weather forcast for heavy rain all day today, I decided to come to St Martin’s armed with all the things needed for a smoothie. Well, the weather turned out to be rather different – bright but very, very breezy. I suggested making smoothies anyway and the children were very enthusiastic. First we cut up [...] -

Hello and Happy Halloween! I thought I’d show you a Pumpkin I grew in my garden this year. It was huge and very heavy, even though this picture is decidedly un-impressive! Lots to make soup with though. I think all the schools should have a Pumpkin growing contest next year and have a Pumpkin soup day. Enjoy your [...] -

Today I had a bit of a clear out with Jan, our Mum volunteer before we had our gardening session with the children. We needed to make a bit more space for more vegetables. The mint has been moved out of the raised beds as it was taking over. Also the Shasta daisies have been relocated. [...]
