Many congratulations to all our competitors who took part in the East Lothian inter schools athletics championships on Wednesday 29th May 2013 at Meadowbank stadium. Our team was the winner of the Large Schools’ Trophy and did incredibly well, winning by a large margin. They broke or equalled three Meadow-bank records:

Owen Ashall broke the P6 boys 150m record, 21.49 secs

Caitlin Street broke the P7 girls 150m record, 21.44 secs

and Cameron Isaac equalled the record set in 1994 by a previous Law Primary pupil in the long jump, 4.15m.

We won a lot of first places and our relay teams were outstanding. There was a really good atmosphere amongst the competitors and the children are to be congratulated on their impeccable behaviour and sportsman-ship. Well done to all who took part – you were a credit to the school!

Our Primary 6C class were thrilled and intrigued when we were given the opportunity to work with Charades to create our very own rock song. We had no idea how songs were written, how music was composed and finally how recordings were made. With the help of Mathew and Robin we were able to experience all of these disciplines.
During our song writing sessions all the children felt very comfortable when producing creative ideas, we tried out suggestions, looked at the structures of our writing and it was just thrilling when you knew that one of your lines had made it into the final song. With Mathew’s guidance we selected the music for our verse, chorus and pre chorus; it sounded incredible on our final recording day once Robin had worked his magic. Our classroom was transformed into a real life music studio and we had to make several reacordings just to get it exactly right. Overall it was a fantastic memorable experience; thank you Charades. Here are some memories of our recording session:

Our next topic in P6 is `Energy’. This week we have been learning about the different forms of energy and the way that energy can be transformed from one form to another. To investigate this we will be holding an Invention Convention on 9 May and hosting our P5 guests. The task is to create an invention which is powered by one of the forms of energy that we have been learning about eg. kinetic, potential, light, electrical, chemical.
To help us get started here are some websites and ideas that you might be able to develop in your own invention. Good luck!

In P6 we have just completed our Victorian topic. It has been a fascinating topic as we learned about life in Britain and the Empire during the Victorian period. During the topic we learned about famous Victorians, scientists, engineers, inventors and even Darwin’s theory of evolution. We also researched Victorian objects and created our own museum which was visited by the school and our parents. Each class also travelled back in time to experience a true Victorian school day, including a visit from the strict school inspector. The topic was completed with a Victorian Murder Mystery when the classes learned about the death of `William Abbott’ and our task was to gather evidence from Victorian North Berwick and its residents. During the day we learned about how our town has changed since the Victorian period and following our day of investigation we discovered who was the murderer. Many thanks to all of the parents and witnesses who supported our topic.
Here are some memories:

On Friday 15th March P6 will be opening a Victorian museum and it will be open to visitors on that day. We are currently gathering original objects for our museum (primary sources) and are also creating other displays for the museum. The museum will be about the lives during the Victorian period; at home, at play and at work. All contributions will be gratefully received (and returned).
To help us in this task Susan Cowie visited P6 last week and helped us to think about how to plan a museum. It was a fun and informative visit.
