Beach Party Mania

On Thursday afternoon, all primary 5 pupils, teachers, lots of parents, the press from Living Magazine and Jen Edwards, country Ranger, headed for West Beach for their Beach Party. A celebration of their year long responsibility for adopting and cleaning the beach and the successful achievement of their John Muir Awards.

There was a picnic to start with, followed by a huge beach clean with all hands on deck and then the fun and games began. Including French boules, sandcastle building  and parachute games. All parents who attended joined in and the afternoon came to an end with all classes performing their Shadow Puppet Shows behind wind breaks on the beach.

The sun shone brightly all afternoon and great fun was had by all. Apparently many children were also spotted later in the evening swimming in the sea and finishing off their sandcastles!

Spectacular Shadow Puppet Show!

The Environmental Studies focus for this term in primary 5 has been on Science and conducting experiments. As part of the focus on light, the pupils have been making shadow puppets with our art specialist Mr Connel. They have also been using story boards  to plan their stories and writing short scripts  for their puppet shows. On Thursday last week we all got together to watch each others performances. What a huge success they were too!

John Muir Award Celebrations

Well Done to all primary 5 pupils who all walked part of the John Muir Way this afternoon in the lovely sunshine, then sat outside and were presented with their John Muir Awards by Mr Barnes. Before receiving them they had to review the years events and look back over all the things they had done to earn this prestigious ward. Everyone was really amazed at all the hard work they had done!

Tripping the Light Fantastic!

All primary 5 pupils and teachers have been involved in learning about Light this week and having to put their Scientists heads on to carry out experiments, predict what will happen and then discuss the results. Our area has been a hive  of activity with prisms, rainbows, mirrors, ray boxes, convex and concave lenses, kaleidoscopes and optical illusions all over the place. Pupils were seen making wierd shapes with their bodies to create shadows in the playground several times during this lovely sunny week. Here is a preview:

Good Vibrations

Well Science Fever has hit primary 5 this week and there have been experiments galore, pupils bringing in their instruments and sound workshops. What  a busy and fun time we have had.

Our focus this week has been on the states of matter and Sound vibrations. Today Gordon came in to do his Surround Sound Workshop and we all listened to different pieces of music inspired by nature and drew what the music made us think about. Then we made music with  everyday objects and items from nature like twigs, branches, pine cones, straws, bottles etc.

Finally we all worked together in teams and used these objects as percussion instuments, we learned a song and then did a performance, which Gordon recorded. We hope to be able to share the final outcomes with you here soon….so watch this space!

Places of Worship Visit

Today all primary 5 pupils went on a visit to the Mosque and Synagogue in Edinburgh, along with their teachers and some parents. It was a really interesting visit and we learned a lot. We are also continuing our learning in class and two classes in primary 5 are doing an assembly next week  to share what they have learned.

For homework tonight THURSDAY 13TH MAY please share what you found out today with others by writing a comment on our blog.

Write one sentence about the Mosque and one sentence about the Synagogue, sharing something you learned in each place of worship.

Ready Steady Bike

In primary 5 our HEALTH focus this term is on bike and cycling safety.

Today all primary 5 pupils will be participating in the Ready Steady Bike Scheme and will bringing their bikes into school. They have already checked that they are safe at home or with Dave from the bike shop and are now raring to go.

Please remember to bring your bikes and cycle helmets to school on the following dates: Thursday 6th, 20th and 27th of May. Please leave them near the front entrance where there the spaces are marked.

You will not bring your bike in on the 13th because we will be out on a school visit that day.

Over the next few weeks homework on a Thursday night will be to add a comment on the weblog to this post.

Write down TWO things you learned during the Ready steady Bike session today 6th May.

Badminton Festival and Bike Check Demo

Well all primary 5 pupils had a very hectic day today which started at the Sports Centre with a badminton festival. We had lots of helpers from the High School and Telford College and it was very busy and great fun. We all managed to learn a lot of new skills.

Then this afternoon we had a visit from Dave about how to make sure our bikes are safe to ride around on. Everyone was given a handout to take home explaining about Ready, Steady, bike. A healthy schools programme that we can take part in during May in the school playground.

This course is great preparation for cycling proficiency in primary 6 and the school is ecnouraging all pupils to take part. Unless a pupil has completed the Scottish Cycle Training, we ask that an adult accompanies them to and from school on their bike.

For homework tonight Thursday 29.4.10 you will be writing a comment with two sentences. One exeplaining what you enjoyed and learned from the badminton festival and one sentence explaining what you learned about bicycle safety in school today.

We will be looking at them in class tomorrow.

HOWDY FROM THE USA!

Hello to primary 5C and all other pupils and teachers in primary 5. I am so sorry not be able to start the final term with you and am really missing you all and hearing all about your easter holiday adventures. Unfortunately due to the volcanic eruption I have not been able to get home and am having quite an unexpected adventure of my own.

There are thousands of people here in Florida trying to get back to Europe but the American Airlines and people have been so kind and helpful. The person who we are renting an apartment from has let us stay as long as we want and we are right on the beach not far from Kennedy Space Centre. Yesterday  was a very exciting day here as the Challenger Space Shuttle returned home from its mission in space and landed at the Space centre. There was a loud sonic boom as it approached and everyone was very excited.

We are spending our time checking in with the airport everyday, on the phone trying to get a flight, walking miles along the beach and reading lots of books. I am on my 12th novel now. How many books did you mange to read during your holiday?

I know you will all be on your best behaviour and working really hard for the teacher who is looking after you and I am hoping to be back with you next week. I am getting really homesick now and wanted to let you all know that I am missing you.

Hope to see you soon from  Mrs Macniven

I am staying on the East  side of the ” pan handle” (right) in a place called Melbourne. I know you are looking at weather this week so have attached a link to the weather forecast here.
