John Muir – why is he so important?

Once again primary 5 are in pursuit of the prestigious John Muir Award and this year their focus is on pollution. They will be adopting a beach through the Marine Conservation Society, working very closely with the Ranger and will be learning about water treatment from Mr Conlin when he visits.

In September all the primary 5 classes visited John Muirs birth place in Dunbar and learned a huge amount about the great man from the staff David and Pauline. They had lots of fun and would like to say a huge thank you to them. The pupils will also be having their say in the comments below:

    I realy liked Johns birthplace and i would love to tell you my 4 favourite facts.

    1.John was born on the 21st of april 1838.
    2.he live in the house next to his birth place for 8 years.
    3.John died on christmas eve in 1914.

    This is my favourite one.

    4.All the children belived in ghosts!

  3. I lernt lots of things about John but my favourite was like any boy John had been delighted to leave school but he soon began to miss his studies it was really exititing.

    I lernt that John played with gun powder in a canon it is so dangerous.

    My favourite fact was Johns book our national parks captured the
    imaginat of the American public and brought him to the attention of
    the new president Theodore Roosevelt.

    John could only play for a few hours each Sunday.

    JI LEARNED ON MY VISIT THAT OHN MUIR was married and he had a daughter called helen and he sent a peice of heather to her.JOHN MUIR met the PRESideNT OF THE USA .JOHN MUIR could read before he was three!!! my faverite fact is JOHN MUIR WAS 1 OF 8 CHILDREN.HE HAS 5 SISTERS AND 2 BROTHERS.

    I loved the John Muir birthplace, I loved learning about Yosemite valley it sounded really nice, I wouldnt mind visiting there myself.

    The whole thing about the file getting into his eye and getting blinded sounded aufel .The bit that decided to dedicate his life to gods invention nature was realy intresting and nice.

    He loved adventure, thats for sure and thats realy to me quite intresting.

    My favourite thing about John is he found the conservation moment.

  6. When I went to the birth place I learnt that Johns birthday was the 24th of April and that he found a little dog called Stickeen he found on the mountin my favourite fact was that Johns dad was an army seargent!.

  7. I liked John Muir’s birthplace it was great. I learned that he was married. He also was temporarily blinded in an accident in 1864.He had two daughters called helen and wanda. My favourite fact was that he died in 1914 on Christmas Eve of pneumonia.

    I really enjoyed jone muirs birth place
    the best thing about John Muirs burth place was the chair that made all the noises. the loafers chair.

    I also learnt that John died on Christmas Eve 1914 and his father Daniel Muir, died in 1885 John died at the age of 86.

    I found out that jhon lived in the house next door to his birth place wich was very interesting.

  9. I really liked Johnn Muirs birth place. My favorite thing was the loafers chair. I also found out that he married louies,was voted greatest californian and had two daughters called Wanda and Helen.

    John was fascinated bye the lillies his aunt would grow.
    One of his favourite things was looking at baby chicks and eggs in nests.
    John’s first glimpse at Yoesmite left him stunned.
    My favourite thing was that he got caught in a storm and he danced the highland fling all night to keep warm.

    That John Muir Went to Australia,
    John’s wife Louie died in 1906,
    In 1838 John Muir was born.
    My favourite thing was John’s invention the screaming chair.

  12. John lived in a house in Dunbar between 1841 and1849 .

    John walked from Indian apolos to Cuba and it was about 1000 miles.

    In 1914 john muir died.

    My favourite bit of the trip was when we got to feel how it was for children to get the belt in the olden days.

  13. When we visited John Muir birth place I learned that his sisters were
    called Joanna Muir Mary Muir Annie Muir and Margret Muir. Daniel
    never got his picture taken because It was not in the bible. His wife
    was called louie. My favourite fact was if you bend over and look through your knees every thing looks different.

    1. John went camping with the american president Theodore Roosevelt
    2. John went to Dunbar grammar school in 1836
    3.John lived in the house nextdoor for eight years
    But my favourite fact is that he went camping with the american president Roosevelt .
    I really enjoyed the Jhon Muir trip.

    Everybody got hit by the belt.

    We got to watch tv about John Muir. His 11th birthday was on a
    boat .1914 he died on christmas eve. 2003 John Muir birth place
    opened. My favourite fact was learning that John Muir was married.

    There was no after – school activities for John he had to just go straight home for tea,
    John’s life as a school boy was very diffrent from today.

    These are some of the pieces of information that I found out.John was born on the 21st of April 1838. John went camping with(Theodore Roosevalt – the president of the USA) .John’s favourite place was called Yosemite valley.
    My favourite fact was when John danced on top of a mountain doing the highland fling to keep him self warm.

  21. When I went to the John Muir Birthplace I learned that John use to hang upside down and see what the world looked like in different ways. Johns father was very religious and beat him lots and the last thing is John went to Enter Dunbar Grammar School in 1845 but the best thing was one of Johns inventions was the Loafers Chair that made a noise when you sat on it.

    I am writing to you to tell you about my time in the John Muir Birthplace.

    I really enjoyed my time in the birthplace, I learnt loads about him, he was a very crazy and strange man to done the highland fling all night.

    I also really enjoyed sitting on the loafers chair (even though it DIDN’T scare me, but it was probably more realistic in those times.)We didn’t get to know that much about the invention that woke you up and tipped you out of bed in the morning because I would of liked to know a bit more about it.

    My favourite bit of the John Muir birthplace was where you got to see the wall of John’s second house and how you got to see how long he lived in it.
