Eco-Committee

The Eco-Committee is now officially up and running!  We will meet regularly to discuss environmental issues affecting our school and we will make decisions about ways in which we can make our school a more eco-friendly place to learn.  Please check out our new notice board outside the gym hall for further information.  We would appreciate it if you would not lean on it when you are waiting in the corridor!!!  Thanks!

Law Primary has (in 2007) been awarded a Silver Award from Eco-Schools!!  We are all very proud to receive this for all the hard work we’ve done!  After the Christmas holidays the Eco-Committee will meet again to revise the action plan which will lead us forward to our first Green Flag.  A newsletter will be sent out in January with more updates!

Composting

Law Primary School will be restarting the composting again after the October holidays.  Last session we had such an enormous response from everyone that our big compost bin could not cope with the all the fruit peelings!  This year we have decided to compost our waste on a rota system.  Please look below for when your year group will be responsible for composting their waste (this means that someone from each class will empty and wash their own class bin in the big compost bin in the sensory garden).

Week beg 22nd Oct – Week end 16th Nov 2007:  PRIMARY 1

Week beg 19th Nov – Week end 14th Dec 2007:  PRIMARY 2

Week beg 17th Dec – Week end 21st Dec 2007:  NO COMPOSTING

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS

Week beg 7th Jan – Week end 1st Feb 2008:  PRIMARY 3

Week beg 4th Feb – Week end 29th Feb 2008:  PRIMARY 4

Week beg 3rd Mar – Week end 21st Mar 2008:  PRIMARY 5

EASTER HOLIDAYS

Week beg 7th Apr – Week end 2nd May 2008:  PRIMARY 6

Week beg 5th May – Week end 30th May 2008:  PRIMARY 7

THERE WILL BE NO COMPOSTING IN THE MONTH OF JUNE DUE TO THE WARMER WEATHER AND WE WILL BE DOING MORE GARDENEING BY THIS TIME!

The Eco-Committee have gathered all of the wish lists together and have voted for their top 3 favourites. The priorities for this session will be the following:

1.                    to find out about the possibility of getting solar roof panels

2.                   to raise money to buy more picnic benches for the playground

3.                   to paint more murals in the playground

We will use some money from our Eco-Grant, which will follow shortly (we hope!!!) and we will try to raise money for any shortfalls. We will be asking parents to help with bigger jobs like the painting!  This involvement will help us to tick another box for our Silver Award!!!

  1. Recently I have been working with Miss Brodie and the Pace and Challenge group in p6. We have been trying to find out about the possibilty of saving more energy at our school. We would like to install a wind turbine in the playground, either on the field or mounted on the building itself! There’s lots of loop holes to jump through before we get there but I’m sure we’ll get there soon! Hopefully we’ll have more to tell you all after the Easter holidays! Watch this space!!!

Also, the Eco-Committee are waiting to find out if they will receive funding from Switched on Communities for water and energy saving devices. We hope to buy energy efficient strip lights and water saving devices for the toilet cisterns… we’ll keep you posted!!!!

  2. Everyone is working really hard towards our next award! The Eco-Committe have recently put together a photograph album which will be displayed at the front entrance to the school. This is to allow parents and visitors to view all the hard work that has been happening in our school. I hope everyone has been thinking about how we can follow our Eco-Code! This will be put together officially by the Eco-Committe then displayed for the whole school to see on the noticeboard. Keep checking the board and asking your Eco-Rep about any updates!

  3. I think our assembely on eco-schools is going great!!! We have a song that we are going
to use at the begining of our assembely the song is called earth song.

  4. We think the Eco-Committe has done really, really well this year and they will work 50 times better next year!
    Well done for getting the Bronze Award!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)
