EeePC and web security

The Netbook computers the P5 children are trialling have been very warmly welcomed. They are clearly a fantastic resource, and both staff and pupils are excited by their possibilities.

Some parents have raised alarm, however, that the computers contain no security measures when accessing the Internet. At school, unsuitable web sites are blocked by the school server, but away from school access is unlimited. David Gilmour’s response was that P5 parents have signed a letter to say that they will be responsible for their child’s use of the Netbook at home, and so no further safeguards are necessary. Some PC members were still concerned that parents might be unaware of web security issues or unsure of how to deal with them. Mr McGillivray has taken note and will try to issue some advice.
