Parent Council Meeting on 11th June 2012

This was the last meeting of the year and as we’ll be sharing a building very soon, we invited the the St Mary’s Parent Council and their new Headteacher (Clare Graham) along so that we could meet and get to know each other. It was a good opportunity and everyone found it useful.

Before they arrived we had a quick chat about whether moving Parent Council meetings to a different night or time might mean more parents being able to come along – a decision will be taken at the start of the new session and the dates for meetings next term will be posted when they are confirmed.

We wish Erica Muirhead and Gillian Greenshields good luck as they leave the Parent Council with their children moving to King’s Meadow and thank them for their contributions.

Parent Council Meeting on 14th May 2012

At the meeting Mrs Swinton gave an update on staffing for next year – there will be a few new members of staff and parents will be advised of their children’s new teacher as soon as possible. The Council were also told of a delay in the expected date of entry to the new school building to November – this is mainly down to bad weather, wind in particular, which has delayed building work.

The main discussion at the meeting was around how to encourage more parents to get involved in the work of the parent council. A few suggestions were made and some of these will be taken forward next year. The long-standing issue of road safety around the school was also discussed – the Parent Council chair attended a meeting and advised that firstly some funding has been secured to improve pedestrian access in Victoria Road through pavement widening and secondly that it is hoped that a temporary order restricting vehicle access in Victoria Road to residents only may be possible, but this is still to be fully discussed and agreed with East Lothian Council.

Members also saw a demonstration of an online resource website called Espresso Primary, which the school are considering using.

You can read the minutes of the meeting here and the next meeting is on Monday 11^th June at 7pm. We’ve invited the Parent Council from St Mary’s to attend from 7.30pm (so that we can quickly cover any items for discussion). It is a good opportunity to get to know them ahead of moving into the new building as we expect there to be issues in the future that affect both schools.

Changes to Parent Council Constitution

We want to change our constitution, the set of guidelines which describe how we work, and we have to let all parents know about this. We want to remove the position of ‘Treasurer’ from our constitution as we no longer carry out any fundraising work and so we don’t need one. A full copy of the constitution and the intended changes is available to view here. A copy is also currently displayed on our noticeboard and paper copies are available in the school office.
