Welcome Home Parade

Royal Regiment of Scotland.svg

This morning Haddington Infant School children, staff, parents and carers turned out to see the Royal Regiment of Scotland receive the Freedom of East Lothian and to welcome the soldiers home after their tour of Afghanistan.  The children were thrilled to see the soldiers and hear the military band.  The children also liked the lively little Shetland pony mascot, Lance Corporal Cruachan IV.  What a great morning and a memorable experience.  We are grateful to the parents and carers who came along to help walk the children round – thank you.

Parent Council Meeting Tuesday 19th March 2013

We welcomed some new faces to this week’s Parent Council meeting so would like to thanks those parents who braved the weather to attend.  Any new parents are very welcome to come along to the next meeting.

As usual this meeting covered a range of topics.  Mrs Swinton gave her regular head teacher’s report which advised that Mrs Robison is due back to work in April on temporarily reduced hours.  We also heard about the school development plan which next year will focus on reading and parental views will be sought.

A number of issues were raised by parents at the meeting.  The safety of the bottom of the path from the school to the Aubigny Centre was raised and Councillor Tom Trotter agreed to investigate whether there is any possibility of some safety features being installed, although there are issues about ownership of the land which may make this difficult.  Parking and road safety was also discussed and Mrs Swinton advised that the architect had been contacted about additional barriers to stop parents driving over the grass to get round the bollards and drop their children off at the car park.  The Parent Council would like to ask that parents respect the barriers.

We had a good discussion on the transition to P4 and Mrs Swinton described some new transition activities that are planned next term and the possibility of deputy heads of both schools spending some time in the other school to get to know the children before transition and to ensure the children settle well afterwards.  These will be communicated to P3 parents in due course.

The final big topic was the playground.  Mrs Swinton has been in touch with the architect about the drainage problems so these will be investigated.  Sadly the trim trail could not be moved from the old school, so the PTAs of both HIS and St Mary’s will be raising funds for new playground equipment.  We should also see a new basketball hoop soon.

Full minutes of the meeting are available here for anyone who wants more detail on any of the above.

Water Leak – School is Open

Life is certainly never dull at Haddington Infant School.  Last night just before 5 o’clock water was discovered pouring down the wall of the PE hall, changing rooms and south east corridor.  Water was also pouring through the ceiling of a resource room on the first floor.  The source of the water was traced to the water tank and help was summoned.

The danger of collapsing ceilings and water in electrics is never a safe combination and as the safety of children and staff are a priority we had to cancel the Primary 1 Spring disco and a Groupcall text message was sent out as soon as we were able.

We are grateful to staff who stayed on to help save resources and of course give up another evening to run the Primary 1 disco after the holidays.  Information for Primary 1 parents  and carers will be sent home today.  We are also grateful to Morrisons and the janitor who worked to ensure the school would be open today.

Comic Relief

Well done everyone!  Through selling red noses, dressing up as chefs and cooks and the staff decorating aprons we have raised an amazing £525.00 for Comic Relief.

Children in Primary 1B led a fun assembly where they explained to everyone how Comic Relief started and how it uses the money we raise to help less fortunate children.

World Book Day – Primary 3D

This week we have been celebrating World Book Day.

This morning we had a wonderful morning sharing our work at our World Book Day Open Morning.

P3C orienteering

It was a crisp, bright and sunny morning this morning – perfect for orienteering. P3C headed out to Neilson Park to meet up with our friends from Outdoor Education, who had set up orienteering for us, with markers, keys, a tent, maps, the works! We had a go at map reading to start with, making sure we knew where North was and setting our maps. We then went round the park identifying different features from the map and working out where we were. Once we were happy with what to do, we set off in pairs to work with different maps, finding our markers, using our special keys to time ourselves and heading back to the finish, where we set out time and got a different map. One of the maps had 10 different markers to find. We didn’t realise Neilson Park was quite so big. We were exhausted. One of us was heard to say that today was the best maths ever!
