Outdoor Artwork
This afternoon Primary 1 went outside to create some artwork. First we talked about learning outside and agreed some rules. Mr Dagger wrote down what it would look like and sound like when we were working together outside. With a partner we had to agree on a picture that we were going to create together, using materials found in the playground. We then gathered these materials and created our art pieces. We had some visitors half way through our lesson who really enjoyed finding out about our work.

Clay tiles – 3D art.
We have been learning how to work with clay. Clay comes from the Earth, and when it dries out it goes hard. We have made 2 different types of clay tile this term. Our first tiles were round. We had to roll the clay into a tomato shape and then press it with the palm of our hands to shape it into a round flat tile. We then used round objects to create patterns on one side. We made petal shapes out of card and stuck them around the edge of our tiles to make flowers/masks. We then painted our tiles a primary colour.
Our second lesson was creating square and rectangle tiles. First we went outside and looked at the fields around the school. We were looking closely at the lines and textures in the fields. When we got back to class we made round tiles like before, only this time, using clay tools we chopped the round sides off to create square and rectangle tiles. Using forks, bits of card and clay tools we added texture and lines to our tiles. One they were dry we mixed blue and yellow paint together to create green and painted them.

We have been investigating 2D and 3D shapes. We have made pictures using circles and rectangles. We have also been making 3D towers using blocks and giant construction materials. Last week we went out and about looking for shapes in the environment. We ticked any that we found. We used the pictures we took to make shape posters. We worked together in small groups to make the posters.

Animal Collages
We made these animal collages by working together.. The children worked in pairs to decide on what animal to create and which materials to use.

Broadway Boogie Woogie Collages
Today we looked at a piece of art called Broadway Boogie Woogie by an artist called Pieter Mondrian. He is famous for creating artwork using the primary colours. To make our collages the class had to cut rectangles of different sizes. They folded a piece of paper in half and then cut along the fold. They then put one half to the side and repeated the process with the other half. The children then mixed all their rectangles together and started to create their own collages, inspired by the picture Broadway Boogie Woogie. When we were finished we found out about Mondrian on the interactive whiteboard.

The Street and People Who Help Us
Our project this term is about the street, keeping safe and people who help us. Before the holiday we started this giant display of the street. We have created shops and shop keepers, as well as some other people who help. We are going to add some vehicles and street furniture in the next few weeks.

We have also made life sized people who help us!

The children used the non-fiction books to find out about 4 different people who help us.

Today we were finding out about magic ‘e’. An ‘e’ at the end of a word can sprinkle magic back over one letter to make a short vowel sound say its long sound. We got into different groups and thought about words with magic ‘e’. Then we made wizards and witches hats with different magic ‘e’ words on them.

We have been investigating toys in Primary One and last week Onion brought in a toy he had never seen before. He challenged the children to find out as much about this toy as they could in a very short time! The children told Onion that the toy was a Beebot; that it was made of plastic; that it used batteries to make it go; and that you needed to push buttons to make it move. After having a play with the Beebots, the class looked at a Beebot treasure map. It was very nice, but Onion only had one and there were seven groups in the class.
So each group made their own map for a Beebot to go on. Today we finished our maps and then each team member had to program their Beebot to go on a journey from one point on their map to another.
