Ten members of the Primary 7 class set off for Meadowmill Sports Centre to play in an authority basketball tournament. We played a range of teams from large schools and, by all accounts, the group played well. They did look rather smart as they were kitted out in the new Gullane Primary Sports gear. There were many comments from the basketball coaches and other adults on how smart they all looked.

East Lothian Council is seeking the views of local people on the proposed East Lothian Open Space Strategy. The strategy sets out the vision for new and improved space and also addresses any deficiencies identified. It’s intended to help inform decisions regarding the provision, development, management, maintenance and enhancement of open spaces, play areas and outdoor sports pitches over the period of 2012-2022. It also seeks to ensure that the important role and contribution of open space to communities and the quality of life of local residents is appropriately recognised.

The Open Space Strategy is the second part of a process – the first was an audit of 209 open spaces in the East Lothian towns and villages completed in 2009. The aim of the audit was to provide a clearer understanding of current provision and future needs of local communities. The Audit was completed in 2009 and included assessments of parks, amenity open spaces, play provision and green networks.

The draft East Lothian Open Space Strategy focuses on parks, open spaces, play areas and sports pitches in the East Lothian Council urban and urban fringe areas, in particular the six geographic cluster areas of Musselburgh, Tranent, Prestonpans, Haddington, North Berwick and Dunbar.

The need to make improvements in our open spaces may require higher levels of community involvement, as well as engagement with our neighbouring councils in order to promote and develop habitat and access linkages between areas of open space.

The full strategy can be downloaded or paper copies of the strategy and questionnaire are available at all East Lothian Libraries and at main reception, John Muir House, Haddington and at the Brunton Hall, Musselburgh.

Have you say •Complete the questionnaire online
•Download and complete a PDF questionnaire
Downloads
•Open Space Strategy Report Draft – January 2012
•Cluster Summaries
•Mapped Assessment Report

Strategic Environmental Assessment

The council has also produced an environmental report that details the strategic environmental assessment that has been undertaken on the draft Open Space strategy and indicates the likely significant effects that draft strategy may have on the environment.

If you have any comments on the environmental report please send them to landscapeandcountryside@eastlothian.gov.uk

Thank you for supporting our recently-established,
‘Gullane Little Big Screen’.
There is a programme which runs up to and including May 2012, and includes the whys and wherefores of the initiative. Many of the films are likely to appeal to the primary school age group. To date the family films have been well attended.

We aim to showcase, wherever possible, local films.
To this end, ‘The Journal’ (Gullane PS, 2008/9) will be shown on 17th March at 7.30 pm and ‘Traprain Treasure’ (East Linton PS, 2011) on 12th May (time to be confirmed).

Should you wish to come along to see any of the films that we are showing we would be delighted to see you!

Attached is Little Big Screen’s programme for upcoming screenings including months February till May.

You can also vote on our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Little-Big-Screen/116422525126560) for the ‘Audience Choice’ film scheduled for the 15th of April, or alternatively, vote in person at our next show.

We now have new kit for classes or groups going out of school to take part in sports festivals and events. This idea was discussed with PTA members as well as an interested group of parents. There was much discussion and research, all of which Mr Adamson dealt with, taking in what was on offer for school pupils. Mr Adamson gave careful consideration to quality, style and how much of a logo was already printed on the items. After much thought and planning, Mr Joe Forte seemed to be offering the best deal. He runs the sports shop in Haddington-’Joe Forte Sports’. We are all very grateful for the time he set aside to advise and gather sample pieces for us to review.
The children have been in involved in choice to a degree – some of their ideas were a little expensive!
The PTA have very kindly part funded this kit with the school paying the remainder. We all feel it will be very worthwhile. Each piece of kit, bar the socks and shorts, displays our school badge. The children will be ‘modelling’ all the items during a school assembly to show all the classes how super it all looks. Photos will be taken! We all feel that this new kit will engender a positive team spirit and identity with a possible impact on our performance in due course! The swimming team were allowed to wear the kits for the first time a couple of weeks ago – minus the logos as the kit had only just arrived – and we put in an excellent performance. This, of course, does not take away from the excellent coaching they had received. Many members of the public commented on how super the team looked including the chairman of the Scottish Swimming Association.

My thanks go to Mr Adamson for the time, energy and effort he put in – in his own time – to organising the research and the ultimate purchases made. Very grateful indeed.

The plan will eventually replace the East Lothian Local Plan 2008.

Councillor Barry Turner, the Council’s planning spokesman said: “The Council is interested in hearing the views of everyone with an interest in East Lothian. We want to know what aspirations you have for the way your area might develop over the next ten years or so, and what planning issues you think may need to be addressed in the new plan.

“A series of events has been arranged to gather your views. These will be run independently by Planning Aid for Scotland (PAS), an impartial, charitable organisation that helps people have their say in the planning system. The input will help the Council prepare a document called the Main Issues Report, which will be published for consultation later this year.”

Community meetings for the general public will be held in each of East Lothian’s six main towns, with the addition of an event specifically to discuss the future role of Blindwells new settlement. There will also be a series of additional workshop meetings targeted at specific audiences.

Community Events: Wed 1 Feb, Town House, Haddington, 13.30-16.30; Fri 3 Feb, Town Hall, Prestonpans 9.30 – 12.30; Mon 6 Feb, Community Centre, North Berwick, 18.00-21.00; Thurs 9 Feb, Brunton Hall, Musselburgh, 18.00-21.00; Tues 21 Feb, Loch Centre, Tranent, 18.00-21.00; Sat 25 Feb, Hallhill Healthy Living Centre, Dunbar, 13.30 – 16.30.

Workshops: Blindwells Community Workshop, Mon 13 Feb, Loch Centre Tranent, 18.00-21.00; Community Council Workshop, Wed 8 Feb, Town House Haddington, 18.00-21.00; Business Community Forum, Wed 15 Feb, Brunton Hall, Musselburgh, 16.00-18.00; Developers’ Forum, Wed 22 Feb, Brunton Hall, Musselburgh, 14.00-17.00.

To attend one of the events, register your place by emailing training@planningaidscotland.org.uk or calling Deanne at Planning Aid for Scotland on 0131 220 9730.
