Teddy bears, previously owned by S3 pupils, are winging their way across the world in the interests of geographical research.
We are encouraging people who find them to take care of our bears, look after them for a night or two and then send them on their journey. Finders can blog the teddy experiences via various websites set up by the pupils – we want to learn about the places they have been and will later use the results as an investigation using Geographical Information Systems.
One of the blogs is already up and running and can be accessed here – others will go active over the next few weeks so check back from time to time to see how we’re getting on.

As part of the S2 China Scotland unit, our pupils have been describing a journey from Tibet to the Gobi desert. Some of the essays produced have been exceptional in both geographical content and literary detail.

I’ve just been cleaning up the geography section of the NBHS website and found the following notice about Tern Around – an animation project we completed with S1 (now S4) three years ago. It’s worth revisiting though, just to marvel once more at how many cartoon penguins were sacrificed to make it.

Recently, two S1 Geography classes were involved in a collaborative project with Red Kite Animation Company, the Seabird Centre and primary schools across East Lothian. Tasked with creating short features to be included in a longer film about the migration of the Arctic Tern, the pupils responded with enthusiasm and creativity and produced some excellent work.

The finished film can now be viewed online by following the link to Red Kite Workshops. Watch for the sections on Marine Pollution and Climate Change – the work of our own budding animators – and marvel at the imagination of our primary school children. Never has the migration of a single bird involved so much unncessary bloodshed.

As part of the preparation for the world cup, our former S2s have been looking at various countries in Africa concentrating on the good things, unlike the violence, disease and death-obsessed media.

They have produced some great powerpoints under the title
“Africa is a Happy Place”
with subjects including dance, fashion and, of course, football.
