East Lothian’s WOSSTA boys prepare for life at sea!

West of Scotland Seafish Training Association is working with five youngsters from East Lothian Skills Centre to get them ready for a life in the seafishing industry. They are undertaking a three-week course (one week in January, one in February and one in March) that will equip them to work in one of East Lothian’s traditional industries. By the end of the course the boys will have all the mandatory qualifications required for this profession, plus some additional ones.

The course covers a wide range of skills, including:

Sea Survival, Basic H&S, First Aid and Fire Fighting (these are all certificated and mandatory for anyone working in boat based industries1 day Stability course (Intermediate level and certificated)

Navigation and Watch Keeping (certificated)

Engineering

Introduction to ropes, knots and fishing gear

Net mending and Gear construction

Morning Care of the catch, afternoon Food hygiene in the fishing industry.

On completion of the course, the boys will also be awarded an overall certificate from WOSSTA. They will also get an introduction to local employers in the fishing industry to open up potential employment opportunities.

Last Friday (8th March) the boys were in the pool at North Berwick, practising their sea survival skills. They had to complete a four-hour theory test before they ever got into the water!

Casey Brunton (aged 15) says:

I am really looking forward to this as it will give me the basic tickets I need to be a fisherman. Quite a lot of my family are fishermen, fishing out of Dunbar. It runs in the family. My uncle and my cousins are fishermen and so were my great granddad and his five bothers. My uncle has his own boat, fishing for lobster and crab. It’s what I really want to do. In the long run, I’d really like to have my own boat.

A WOSSTA spokesperson adds:

It’s been great working with these young lads because it means that they will be competent fishermen and ready for life at sea and all the things that can happen out there. We also show them how to look after their catch and get it ready for sale. East Lothian has a long heritage in the fishing industry and it’s good to be working with young men who are committed to making a life as sea-fishermen and continuing with the tradition.
