Stock
Non-fiction books are called information books in the School Library. They are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal system. Some information books are on restricted loan because of heavy demand or because they have been placed in the School Library by departments for use by students during study periods. Students are also encouraged to use the Internet for information when appropriate.
Most reference books are interfiled with the information book stock. Encyclopaedias, dictionaries, atlases and almanacs are located on the shelves in the IT area.
Fiction is shelved alphabetically by authors’ surname. There are two fiction sections in the Reading Room area. Titles appropriate for students studying Higher English have been arranged in a separate run of shelves.
TALIS
The School Library management system is part of an East Lothian wide system called TALIS. This means that resources can be borrowed from all East Lothian school and Public Libraries.
Careers Library
The Library has information about all Scottish colleges and universities and many English, Welsh and Irish ones. It also holds details on hundreds of possible careers and information on job hunting. This information is accessible in both print and electronic format (i.e. Kudos, and PlanIT ).
Information Technology
The School Library has 13 networked PCs with Internet access. All of these computers have word processing, spreadsheet and drawing packages installed. There is also a scanner attached to one of the PCs. Departments can arrange to have software necessary for their courses installed on the School Library PCs so that students can access materials.
East Lothian Library Service, Services to Secondary Schools
Books, DVDs and story tapes can all be borrowed to support the secondary curriculum. Project boxes of materials can be borrowed from the Library Services via the School Librarian.
Requests for specific book titles and periodical articles or specific subject requests are dealt initially via TALIS. If they cannot be met from East Lothian stock, requests are dealt with using the national inter library loans system.
Local History Library, Haddington
