Rationale

Dunbar Grammar School has a long history of utilising cutting edge technological advances in the delivery of its educational program. We are also leading ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ delivery having piloted ‘Rich Tasks’ and embraced pupil centered learning. We are now the first East Lothian secondary school to offer the ‘CfE’ Technologies outcomes as a inter-departmental colaboration between Computing Science, CDT and Business Education. Our 2010 S1 cohort were the first pupils to experience education that utilises Google Apps technology for its course content, pupils learning portfolioa and reflective feedback evaluations.

In S1-2 pupils will spend a period per week in three subject related specialisms, but continue a common theme. Our theme for the S1 session will be an executive toy that will be produced and marketed by the pupils. The three elements of the course break down into; the design and manufacture, multimedia advertising and the modern international business plan.

Our S2 theme will be based around both physical and virtual entertainment.  Pupils will be expected to design a lego-type toy using 3D software and present a marketing strategy for their design.  In addition students will learn how to create a computer game and promote both toy and game using web technology.

Pupils will be able to access the course content through web based materials. They will then present their work using Google Sites they create and manage themselves. Pupils will have the facility to collaborate and share ideas through this technology advancing each others learning experiences. Finally pupils will be assessed using automated feedback forms that can be incorporated into lessons allowing reflective practice to improve performance.
