‘Which Computer’ Scenarios

This is the assessment for the Computer Systems Unit – you should take great care to cover everything mentioned below!  This exercise should be done on your own.

What I have to do

Pick one of the scenarios below Work through the questionnaire on p116 of the textbook - an electronic copy can be downloaded from here if you prefer to type your answers. Use the internet or computer magazines to find two computers that meet the scenario’s requirements. Write a report in a word processor that compares the two computers and recommends one.  (an example is shown on p117 of the textbook) Carry out the self-assessment on p118 when you are finished.  An electronic copy is available here if you prefer to type your answers.

The Scenarios:

Lizzie is an S6 student at Dunbar Grammar.  She wants to buy a computer that she can take to university with her.  She will travel between home and university at weekends.  Her computer will mostly be used to type reports and essays, but she would like to connect to the internet and use video-calling software like Skype.  She has a budget of £400

Fred is looking for a new tablet computer that he can use to access the internet and play games on.  It needs to be small and lightweight so that he can take it to school.  His budget is £600

Bobby works for a web design company and is looking to buy a new computer.  The computer has to have a fast, powerful processor as he has to do lots of graphics, sound and video editing.  This means he also needs lots of storage space for his work.  He would like to have a device that he can use to backup his work and store somewhere safe each night when he leaves the office.  He has a budget of £1500

Jane is looking to buy a new smartphone, but is confused about which one is best.  She likes to play games and have lots of apps installed.  She would also like to have a large screen for surfing the web.  She has a budget of £500.
