As part of our farming topic we have been looking at different types of farms. Last week we looked at dairy farms, it was very interesting and we found out lots about milking cows and about how busy a farmer is. No matter what time of year it is he always has something to do.
We then went on to look at milk and the products that come from milk. We learned about the importance of milk in our diet and that it contained calcium which is good for our bones. We looked at how we could include milk in our diet instead of just drinking it.
We made fruit smoothies using natural yoghurt, ice cream and milk. Some groups made strawberry, another made orange and of course we had to have banana.

While a group were making smoothies the others were busy doing milky things like butter making. Each group took turns at shaking the double cream which had been poured into two jars. We set the timer to 30 seconds and each shook the jar vigorously. After 20 minutes we had what looked like butter, but Miss Manson told us that there was still more shaking to do after the buttermilk had been drained off. We added some cold water and shook for another few minutes. The water was then drained off before we added four ice cubes. Again,we shook the jar until the ice cubes had melted. Finally the last of the water and buttermilk were drained off and we had two large blobs of butter in the jars. We put the blobs on to a clean chopping board and used wooden spatulas as butter pats to make it into a pat of butter. It was then put in the fridge until the next day when we ate it on fresh bread. Delicious.
