P7s Mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Published by under Assemblies,Citizenship,P7

This week Primary Seven have been learning about the Holocaust as part of our Conflict topic. We have discussed when and how it happened; building from 1933 to 1945, the persecution and discrimination of the Jewish people by the ruling Nazis, the horror of the ghettos and camps. The question many started with, however, is still on our lips: Why?

We have learned about the experiences of ordinary Jewish children as they were bullied, evicted, transported and detained, and we have discussed how the Holocaust impacted on their lives.

Today in assembly we shared our learning and our thoughts about why we should remember the Holocaust, why it should not be forgotten at time passes. We held a minute of silence for everyone to reflect on what we have learned and to respect the memory of those that were killed.

You approached this topic maturely, seriously, sensitively and respectfully P7s -Thank you and well done!

I was impressed with your knowledge, understanding and respect for this very important event in history and with the innovative methods you used to research your information using Google Docs. I was pleased too with the interest you showed in the true story I told you of the Holocaust survivor, Rev Ernest Levy, who is known to us personally at Campie. Your complete respect for the minutes silence showed me how much you had learned about the devastating impact of the Holocaust on millions of families across the world. Well done P7. You can be proud of yourselves.

Not too sure if the school already knows but to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Edinburgh’s Central Library opened a special exhibition that remembered Ernest Levy’s life. I haven’t been to see it yet but saw an article on it in the Scotsman last week and his daughter’s name caught my eye – Judy Russell – who I remember working in the nursery when Nathan was there. It says the exhibition will be on there until 15th March.
