Lusaka
June 30th, 2009
For the past few days we have been staying in the Zambian capital city, Lusaka. Already we have had the chance to experience authentic African life first hand. Yesterday we met Pastor Levy and his wife Annie. They were so welcoming to us and helped us find out where the British Embassy was, so we could drop off our embassy pack. They also directed us to Cairo Road (the main shopping area in Lusaka) where we were able to exchange money, visit the internet cafe and do some shopping. Pastor Levy and Annie then invited us to their house which is in a compound on the outskirts of Lusaka. It was such an eye opener visiting the compound. Many houses don’t have electricity or running water. Annie and the girls prepared a traditional Zambian meal of Shima and vegetables whilst the boys visited the church with Pastor Levy. When we were in the church, we met some of the congregation, many of whom were orphans or widows. We found out about the work of the church and what resources the church needs in order to survive.
It was then time to head back to Pastor Levy and Annie’s house where we shared the meal with them and their children, Dorcas, Vicki, Deborah, Joy, Levy Junior and Jamie. We ate with our hands!
After the meal we decided to head off to the hostel again because it was getting dark. Just as we were about to leave there was a power cut over the entire compound. Traveling back to the hostel was interesting, our bus kept on breaking down. Again, Pastor Levy and Annie made sure we were home safely.
We have never met such friendly and hospitable people. They have definately made our first few days in Zambia much easier.

Great to be able to follow your expedition online (as much as internet usage allows) . Luke, your idea of having a blog is excellent - well done!
