Thanks for comments about communication. Our first newsletter will be out this week with this information included.
Great suggestion about providing information to parents in the playground. We’re already looking into how this might be done (e.g. a notice board in the playground). All suggestions welcome.

I havent heard and no one i have asked knows the names of any of the parents who are working on the different sub groups. Perhaps something can be pinned to the support poles outside the various classrooms for parents to be able to read and to see who is doing what and at what stage they are at.

The last Parent Council meeting discussed a number of issues. High on the agenda were our priorities for the next year, including:
- becomming much better at communicating with the Parent Forum
- Fundraising
- Road Safety
- Campaigning against 2% efficiency savings the school will have to make in 2009/2010
Sub groups have been set up to address each of these issues, so if you want to find out more and get involved in any of these, ley us know.
We also talked about developing story sacks for nusery pupils, making sure every parent has the opportunity to get involved in a way that suits them, and what the vision session at the AGM could bring for us in the future.
Please don’t hesitate to get involved if there’s something you’re unsure about or if you have any ideas about how things are working well.
Watch out for a newsletter soon.

I have discovered a way to get an instant discount on all my household bills and raise funds for the school at the same time.
Who would like to find out more?

We have aprons for the nursery and infants classes, but ask older children to bring in old shirts or aprons.

Does the school provide aprons for the children when they are doing painting/gluing activities?

The minutes of the June meeting have now been posted on the website.
I think a very valid point has been made about litter - in school, our Eco group have organised a rota for clearing up litter but it would seem the children aren’t being as careful with their litter when they are outside school. We can reinforce this at our assemblies, but perhaps some of the parents may want to take up this point with the Co-op.

Has anyone else noticed the litter gathering around the school? From what we can see, there is only one small bin outside the Co-op shop. After nursery/school, we often notice kids dropping litter after they come out of the shop. Should the shop be responsible for picking up this litter? As parents, should we teach our children to stop dropping litter? Should there be more bins around the shop?

i think a zebra crossing over the entrance to the coop is a must to give pedestrians the right of way. lots of nursery and school children seem to be using this crossing at the same time as lots of vehichles are entering and leaving. i dont think this is something which should be left in its present form. considering this is right outside our new school and safety for children is paramount, someone in authority should take responsibility and make sure no child is hurt at this junction by taking a look at this. i wonder how many other parents share this view also.

I totally agree with Clare regarding the gate situation at the school. I have a child in nursery and am extremely concerned that these gates are open at all times. The concern is that while the children are enjoying some play time before the nursery doors open, their safety is compromised in that cars are sill entering/exiting the school grounds (Only this morning a child was caught by their parent before steping into the road of a car). When the children are also leaving the nursery I have witnessed many times where the parent has had to run after & catch their child before they reach this road. The problem, as Clare states is not just the vehicle access gates but the pedestrian gate to the nursery. This is still an ongoing building area with all kinds of heavy goods lorrys etc using the road for site access, this gate should have the standard latch system that the old Sanderson Wynd nursery had. I hope that these gates will remain locked for the sake of all the nursery children.

Thanks for raising your concerns with us Clare. I will alert the Parent Council about the issues you have raised and I’m sure the sub-group will take these on board.

I agree with K Slight about no footpaths or steps from the old Carlaverock to the new road. At the moment the grass if very muddy and full of dogs dirt, children are having to walk through this and getting in a mess. My other concern if saftey for children coming out of nursery. There is currently no fence between the main road into the school and path leading to door for the nursery. Whilst we are waiting to gain entry into nursery children are playing there cars are coming into the school at some speed and all it would take is someone to fall or not look where they are going and an accident could happen. It is not safe for the children and i think a fence could be put up for the childrens safety. The main gates are always open as well for cars and pedestrians into the nursery. Again i think these gates should be kept closed, a latch could be put to the top of the gate (pedestrian) not locked so we could still come and go freely, however if it was closed at all times this again would be safer. There has been incidents where children have come running out of nursery straight out the gate and almost knocked over by cars coming into the school. The main gates for cars could also be locked for security. Parents do not need to park cars in this car park to drop of there children. These gates could be locked once all teachers are in. I know visitors come to the school but if there was an entry system of some sort then the gates could remain locked. The childrens safety is after all the most important thing. Thanks

What is the parent council doing about safer routes to school my concern is that there are no steps/constructed footway to the new road from old carlaverock.
