P4/5 Outing to Bannockburn Heritage Centre & Wallace Monument

Mrs Watson accompanied by parent helpers Mr Orr, Mrs Flynn, Mrs Giamblanco & Mrs Gray, recently took the P4/5 class to the Bannockburn Heritage Centre and Wallace Monument. This was the finale to their class project on Robert the Bruce and William Wallace.

Mr Orr writes about the day:-

” In the morning we visited The Bannockburn Heritage Centre. The children got told a short story about Robert the Bruce and all his friends. The story went onto tell us how he gathered everybody together to make his army. Some of the children got to dress up as part of the story which they really enjoyed!

We then got to see a short film about the Battle. We spilt up into small groups and walked round the centre taking notes of all the things that happened during Robert the Bruce’s reign. The children got to try on lots of different clothing that the soldiers wore during this time. We all then went for a short walk to see the famous Borestone site. This was Robert the Bruce’s command post before the battle; there is a statue of Bruce on his horse situated here.

In the afternoon we visited the National Wallace Monument. Inside the monument were exhibits and displays all about William Wallace; his sword was also there for us to look at.

This was a brilliant day out which the children will remember”

Some of the children from P5 were asked for their comments on the day:-

Liam - ” We got to see William Wallace’s real sword & I really liked it.
It was agony walking all the way to the top of the hill and up all the steps to see the Wallace Monument”

Kyle - ” I really liked the Hall of Fame in the Wallace Monument. We got to wear the armour and it was really heavy and hard to take off”

Bradley - ” The replica William Wallace sword really looked like the real one”
