Primary 1B News March 5, 2010

This week we learned lots of facts about Diplodocus. We learned that it walked on 4 legs and was bigger than a T-Rex. It had a big long neck and was a plant eater. It used its tail to fight off other dinosaurs and to keep itself balanced. We used the information we learned to make models of Diplodocus with clay. Mrs Bryce thinks they look really good!

We have been practising our reading and writing skills. In reading, we are learning how to sequence events in a story. Some of us have been working very hard to sequence sentences without using picture clues. This can be quite tricky at times but we will keep practising!

This week in P1F we learned about another dinosaur, his name was Diplodocus, he had a huge long neck and tail and was a plant eating ‘herbivore’. We found out just how long he was by going outside and measuring out the whole dinosaur. As we measured how long he was, we chalked it out. We each stood and measured 1 metre until we were his whole length: some of us had to measure 2 metres because there were only 18 of us there and Diplodocus was 26 metres long. We were surprised at how long he was. We also found out that Diplodocus used his long neck to reach up and eat from tall trees and that he also used his neck and tail to ‘wack’ T-Rex when he was being attacked.

We did some handwriting and concentrated on the letter ‘c’. In order to help us think about a story we did some role-play drama in the class room to bring a story to life and then we used our imaginations to do a picture or write about a toy coming to life for our own stories.

On Thursday we were visited by a storyteller who told us brilliant stories and we listened really well.

In numeracy some of us started to learn to take away and others were adding using a numberline. We did it by doing ‘jumps’ forwards or backwards on our numberline.

We are now all ready to have a nice weekend!

P7 Learning February 27, 2010

This week 3 P7 pupils; Aaron , Finley and Hannah went to Musselburgh Grammar to give a talk to the Parent Councils of East Lothian on their learning. They gave a powerpoint presentation on how they think their learning has changed over  time at primary school. They created a powerpoint with Mrs Harte and discussed with the class how  their  learning has changed over time. They thought that now they got more of a chance to choose and plan topics ,they knew their learning styles and talked about their emotions more and how they effect their learning. They use talking partners to help with their thinking and they do more group work and active learning using Learning Intentions and Success Criteria and use peer and self assessment to improve their work. What do you think, has your learning changed ? They were nervously excited about giving their presentation but were absolutely fantastic and the parents and teachers who listened to them said they were brilliant.

P7 Fund Raising for Haiti February 27, 2010

P7 have been busy raising money for Haiti. We were set homework to plan and advertise an activity that we could do that would raise money for the people of Haiti. We had lots of different ideas ,some people sold cakes that they had made to neighbours and friends, another group had a sponsored walk and sponsored silence, other groups made cards and book marks and sold them in school, another group wrote poems and made them into a book to sell to people, another group were paid to try food that they didn’t like, another group had raffles and name the dog or guess the teddy bear’s birthday and another group had dance lessons in the G.P room and a penny trail . After two weeks of advertising and running our business we managed to raise over £400. Mrs Harte was amazed and thought we would all make great business partners in the future. We had fun making the money but it was hard work.

Another very busy week in Nursery.

On Tuesday we celebrated Chinese New year. A big Thank you to Salina and

Janica Chan’s parents who provided us with a chinese meal. We found it quite

difficult to use chopsticks. We watched a chinese parade on the whiteboard and we particularly liked to see the dragon dancing. We had a story about a boy called

Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Chari Bari Ruchi Pippi Peri Pembo .

We also learned to say and sing Happy New Year- Kung Hey Fat Choy.

On Thursday and Friday we were looking at backpacks and have come up with lots of ideas about what we would like to learn-we talked about camping, adventures, sleepovers.

The morning group visited Wallyford Library on Thursday and we decided we we would all like to join the library. Thank you Wilma for the lovely stories.

Fourth Blog from P1F (was P1G!) February 26, 2010

We have had a good week in P1F. We have learned about a new dinosaur called Triceratops. Triceratops has a frill which he uses for fighting and keeping himself safe. He has horns, two facing forward on his head and one on his nose. His skin is very  bumpy so we made ‘bumpy triceratops faces’ using beans. His tail wasn’t as long as T-Rex’s tail because Triceratops had four legs which balanced him well. He ate plants and so we know he was a ‘herbivore’. His head was as long as Miss Freeman lying down! Some of us learned to draw a Triceratops on the whiteboard.

We also learned to do cutting, patterns and beading things to improve our fine motor skills ready for handwriting. We looked closely at forming the letter ‘a’ and we are going to concentrate on more of our ‘caterpillar letters’.

The Caterpillars have also started their ORT reading and are finding out about the adventures of Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy. We also learned how to sequence a bit from the book ‘The Snowman’ in reading using pictures and words. Thankyou for reading, more next week!
