Posted by pharte in : Uncategorized , 2commentsIt has been a busy week in Primary 7. We have been writing letters to Mrs Beveridge to try to persuade her why a Fair Trade Tuck Shop would be a good idea.We found out lots of reasons why we should buy Fair Trade because if we don’t farmers are exploited and don’t get a regular wage so they can’t afford to buy food and medicines for their children or send them to school. We also learned that thousands of children are living as slaves in the Ivory Coast harvesting the cocoa beens that we use to make chocolate. We thought this was really unfair and were shocked that children could be used like this so that we can have cheap chocolate in this country.Did you know a cocoa farmer only get 1p for every bar of chocolate we eat and the chocolate companies make the most profit? (that was a rhetorical question, we were using those in our persuasive letters to Mrs Beveridge -it is a question that doesn’t need to be answered.
We have also been doing work with Judy Anderson our school nurse, on our Headstrong Programme . This week we were discussing loss and berevement and it was quite sad it made us think about things that we have lost in our lives. We are still reading lots of books for our Accelerated Reader Quizzes and Mr Lavery came to the class to tell us how well we doing, everyone is trying to read a book at their level then get at least 85% on the quiz, lots of our class have been getting 100% which is fantastic.

On Thurday the basketball team went with Mrs Harte to a basketball tournament at Meadowmill. We were competing against 8 other schools in East Lothian. We were a wee bit nervous because we hadn’t played as team before. Our first game was against Kings Meadow and we played well, even though lots of our shots didn’t go in the basket, we still won. We also won our next 3matches and drew 1more. Then we had to play Law Primary who were very good -but we still played well as a team and tried our hardest until the end, although we did get beat. Our final game was against Campie and we did well but just couldn’t get the ball into the basket. We came third in the tournament and Mrs Harte said she was very proud of us. Another teacher came over to Mrs Harte and told her he thought we had played very well too and that their school would like to play us in a friendly match.
