Saving our Rainforests November 27, 2009

Posted by preid in : Uncategorized , 1 comment so far

We completed our rainforest topic with a visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh to find out what a real rainforest might look like. Our guide worked in the Amazon so we learned lots of new things and shared what we already knew with her. We had a great time and came away knowing even more about rainforests.

We have learned about why rainforests are so important to everyone and what happens when they are destroyed. We decided that we want to help and have chosen to raise money for The Prince of Wales Charity RainforestSOS. The first thing we have done is hold an art exhibition of all our wonderful paintings and work. Our families came along to see our work and buy our paintings for a smal donation. We also held a raffle, and we made nearly £45.00.

We have now moved on to our Recycling topic. We decided this would be an important topic to learn more about because we feel it is linked to what we have already learned. about the rainforest. We have already learned about the different things that we can recycle and had a talk from Emily Murphy from East Lothian Council. She is going to work with us to help Wallyford School recycle even more. So keep looking and perhaps you can find out how to recycle more at home!

As usual primary 6 have been keeping very busy doing a lot of learning!  Here’s just a taster of whats been happening.

We have all been learning different things in our maths.  Some people have been learning about decimal numbers, some have been learning about positioning and some people have been getting tested.  We are pleased to say that everyone who got a maths test, passed.  Well done!

We have been doing a lot of reading too.  Miss Howie is now reading us the 3rd book in the Darren Shan series.  Some of us went to see the movie in the holidays but the books are much better.  We have all been reading group novels.  Some of us finished ours really quickly.  Miss Howie is really pleased with all the reading we are doing.

We have been keeping active ouside the classroom too.  We have been playing tag rugby with Craig.  Its been brilliant getting muddy on the field.  On Wednesday we are all going to a rugby festival at Pinkie.  It should be good fun.  Mrs Barclay has been keeping us busy too.  We have been doing gymnastics with her.  We are really improving.  On a Tuesday afternoon we go outdoors to learn.  Last Tuesday we walked up to Fa’side Castle.  It was a long walk but we saw lots of things on the way.

Mrs McCallum has been coming in on a Tuesday to teach us french.  She makes our learning fun by playing games with us and teaching us french songs.

Thank you for reading our blog.  If you have any comments please write them.

We have been learning about different kinds of transport . We looked at things that could travel in the sky , on water and on the road. We were listening to a cd and had to try and identify the different transport sounds. We went over some of our traffic club messages and  we went outside and practised crossing the road safely. Alison the lollipop lady came into Nursery and we took photographs of her uniform . She gave us her old lollipop stick to use outdoors. This week we asked to have police oufits outdoors.

This week we are learning about reflection and shadows. Today we looked at our shadows on the wall and on the ground outside. We found out that the whiteboard was good for making shadows on.

Hello from Primary 1B! November 23, 2009

We have been learning sounds and how to read and write them in words. Today we learned the letter j and we found lots of words that begin with j like jam, jet and jelly. We looked at some jelly wiggling on a plate and we all wiggled like the jelly when we said the sound. We all wanted to eat the jelly but there wasn’t enough for everyone! Dylan wished we had a jelly that went right up to the top of the room and Khai wished it went right up to the sky!

Last week we learned about bullying and today we read a story called “We are gentle, we don’t hurt others”. The animals in the story were trying to be kind and gentle to Alfred Aligator because he had hurt his tail. We are all trying to remember the Golden Rule that says “Do be gentle” when we are playing with our friends at school.

Friday saw the arrival of the biggest talent contest in the land.  Primary 7 organised their own version of Britain’s Got Talent in order to raise money for Children in Need hosted by Gary and Robbie.  The standard was very high and the show itself was fantastic to watch.  A huge thank you to Mrs Harte and primary 7 for organising such a successful event.   Well Done!!

This week in maths we have been doing symmetry and money. In grammar we have been learning metaphors and similies. Today we had a talent show to raise funds for children in need.  A lot of the children in our class took part and it and it was a lot of fun, we have some talented children at Wallyford.  In PE we have been doing gymnastics with Mrs Barclay.  In art we looked at shadows and shading, we all had fun drawing a ball and a house.  In spelling today we challanged our talking partners to a game of pictionary, we sometimes found it difficult to figure out what word our partner had drawn.  We are looking forward to next week as we are all taking part in a rugby festival.

P4 have started skiing lessons and it’s been great fun so far but sometimes it can be hard work. We have been learning how to use the tows and how to slow down by making a pizza shape with our skis. Some of us can turn by tilting our feet to one side.

Our Environment November 16, 2009

On Monday 9th November a lady called Emily who works for East Lothian Council came in to give us a talk about recycling and the 3 R’s. The 3 R’s stand for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. “We learned that if you put something in the bin and not the recycling bin it will go to the landfill. All the rubbish in the landfill gives off bad gases and this is bad for our environment.” Abbie B “I learned that when you recycle, something old becomes something new.” Ryan “I learned that if you recycle something you could get it back as something else.” Steven “If we reduce, reuse and recycle it saves energy.” Jack.

P4 are trying very hard to reduce, reuse and recycle at school and at home.
