Success for Primary 1 and Primary 1/2

These are photos of the preparation of our Pallet Garden for the Garden Scotland Exhibition at Ingliston Showground. Both P1 and P1/2 planned, created and set up the garden based on the story Oliver’s Vegetables written by Vivian French. We visited the allotment to learn about growing plants and went to our local beach area to search for driftwood and shells to display in our garden. We tasted vegetables during veginvasion sessions. We were all delighted when we won a silver gilt award. If you would like to see our entry it is now displayed in the entrance hall of the school.

Little and Large Cookery Competition

Well done to Danielle and Nicole who represented the school in the Little and Large cookery competition. The girls cooked flavoured rice, kebabs and a fruit tart and were supported in their efforts to win the trophy by Lauren, a S4 pupil at Musselburgh Grammar School. The three girls won the Musselburgh Cluster heat. Well done girls!

The Enlightenment and the Burgh

As you have no doubt seen in the local papers, Primary 5 have been learning about a very important period in history - The Age of Enlightenment.
Musselburgh, and Newhailes House in particular, became centres of learning during the 18th Century and the pupils learned about the lifestyle of the period and the people who influenced the great changes which took place during that time.
They visited the National Portrait Gallery and the Georgian House and will visit Newhailes House early in the new term.

The children will also be involved in the Enlightenment Festival which takes place in the Brunton Hall on Friday May 1st and Saturday May 2nd.
This is a two day festival of literature and music and includes lectures on the characters of the time, a performance of a play written in 1790 and a dramatised reading of the letters of Jane Welsh Carlyle. Leaflets offering further information will be displayed around the school. Tickets are available from the Box Office of the Brunton Hall and cost £5 per night or £7.50 for the two nights.

Sands of Time

On Thursday the 5th February P5, P5/6, P6 and P7 worked closely with artists from the Scottish Opera to stage a performace of the Opera, Sands of Time. The Children had previously been split into three groups of Egyptians, Assyrians and Explorers and had to learn the songs for their part. On the day they all worked very hard to learn their movements while also singing the difficult songs. After lunch and once in costume the pupils performed the opera in front of an audience of infant classes and parents. Everyone agreed that the children looked fantastic and performed to a very high standard.

Presentations

On Friday the tenth of October our Pupil Council members proudly received their badges from Maureen Jobson, Acting Head of Education. Mrs Jobson congratulated the children on their achievement and wished them well in their new role.

Mrs Jobson also presented a gift to Sarah O’Neill a nursery nurse in the Communication Provision, who has retired after eighteen years at the Burgh. The staff, pupils and parents as well as Mrs Jobson would like to thank Sarah for all her hard work and commitment over the years.
