East Lothian: Glow Op’s Training- Day 2

Something to lift us out of tonight’s horrible weather!

(Thanks to Mr W for the J-Peg)

Today I spent the day at Prestonpans Education Centre for Day 2 of our Glow Operational Training, and I am still buzzing! :P

As I you will be aware, there are two administrator roles in Glow. These are the Accounts and Services Manager (ASM) and the Site Collection Administrator (SCA). Each of these is a role and not necessarily specific to an individual. These roles can be controlled centrally within an authority or devolved to school level. Each Local Authority will make their own decision.

The majority of time today was spent learning about the role of SCA. I scribbled quite a lot of notes down, however I also copied a number of bullet points;

What Are The Sites:

The term ‘Site’ is used in Glow as abbreviation for a website or sub-site. This refers to a space or area within the portal. Site Collection therefore means a collection of sites or spaces. The SCA can access and manage all the sites within a collection.

  • Establishment Site: A set of Glow pages for an individual establishment.
  • Role Based Site: First page that a user sees when logging on to Glow. Content and layout of page depends upon the user’s role.
  • Glow Group: A site created by, and for, a group of users with a common interest, to collaborate and communicate.

Site Collection Administrator (SCA)

The main tasks of the SCA role (during the initial rollout) are to set up the establishment site with the agreed web parts. This also includes setting up Role-based sites and creating any top-level Glow Groups. The SCA will be responsible for assigning permissions on sites and Glow Groups.

Main tasks of the SCA role (these are ongoing):

  • News items*.
  • Calendar items*.
  • Web links*.
  • Documents*.
  • Managing the establishment site and Glow Groups.
  • Changing permissions on sites and Glow Groups.
  • Managing reports of unsuitable content received from pupils.

*This includes the modification of these items, if required.

As you can see this/these role(s) is/are very diverse. After lengthy discussion, it will be possible to elaborate. I am looking forward to being part of this process in East Lothian in the very near future; and I will report back in due course!

I would like to say a very big thank you to Paul Smyth, Paul Rooney, Jamie Kirkwood and Stephen Forsyth from RM for their very informative presentations and hands-on help today. Sessions like these are always more effective (and fun) when you have lively confident and knowledgeable presenters and trainers.

Our Glow Mentor Training is scheduled to take place on the 27th and 28th of February, and I have to say I am really looking forward to it!  :-)

  • Hello.

I just wanted to leave a quick comment to say thanks for your Glow blogs. I am a Glow Mentor for Stirling Council and will begin my mentor training in March. Your blogs are really helpful and interesting!

    Thanks

    Alan

  • Thanks for the update. Sounds like a great couple of days.

  • And day 2 proved to be just as exciting! Glad to see that you enjoyed it Tess, and that you are full of ideas about how to take this forward in ELC.

Isn’t it great that your blog can be a location for mentors from other LAs to make contact too? :-)

It just so happens that I’ll be on the team for the ELC Mentor training event late Feb - looking forward to meeting the rest of the ELC Glow team in person!

  • @Alan- Thanks for your comment! I am always keen to hear from other mentors. Once we are fully up and ‘Glow’-ing maybe we could link up for some projects? - Enjoy your training! :P
