Factoid 11: Monogamy
This week I have been finishing The Biosphere topic with my third year Standard Grade class. The Biosphere topic is the first topic that the pupils will study over the two-year course (there are eight topics in total). Earlier in the week we had been revising for the end of topic test. As part of the pupil’s revision, I had set the task of writing up and presenting small projects in groups. The projects were to include the Learning Outcomes of ‘population, habitat, community and ecosystem’. In their groups they chose which animals they would talk about in their presentations.
There were a great number of fantastic slide shows that the pupils developed and presented. Dolphins, whales, elephants and cheetahs were to name a few. One particular presentation that I found really interesting was that on the life of a seahorse. Seahorses are monogamous. Not only are they monogamous, it is the male who becomes pregnant!
This site has a particularly good explanation.
Other monogamous animals include: Emperor penguins, macaw parrots, swans, puffins, and mongooses.
Doesn’t it just go to show? We never do stop learning!
