‘The Rosalba Duo’- Alan Coady and Rosalia Rodriguez-Vazquez

As we are now well into the first term of the session, I had planned to keep my festival doings to a minimum until the John Williams concert on the 31st of August, though I have been unable to get hold of tickets for the event. However, when I learned that my friend and colleague Alan Coady was giving a recital, I was really keen to go and watch.

Alan is a Guitar Instructor for East Lothian council. He has been teaching guitar for twenty-five years. He is also a founder member of The Edinburgh Guitar Quartet. Last night he was performing with Rosalia Rodriguez-Vazquez. Rosalia, originally from Spain, has just finished her PhD in Phonology and Music at The University of Edinburgh. Rosalia plays the flute. Together Alan and Rosalia form ‘The Rosalba Duo’. They gave their debut performance at the Saint Michael and All Saints Church in Tollcross, Edinburgh. As duo played the following pieces during the hour:

Jean Baptiste Loeillet de Gant (1680-1730)

Sonata in A minor

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992)

Histoire du Tango

George Frederick Handel (1685-1759)

Sonata in A minor

Xavier Trastorno (b.1960)

El viento del este.

Johann Christoph Pepusch (1667-1752)

Sonata in G (arr. Robert Brojer)

Alan Coady (arranger)

Celtic Medley

As you can see there was a blend of Spanish and Celtic music. This was enhanced by the acoustics of St Michael and All Saints Church, Tollcross. Though I know longer actively play my flute, I was immensely impressed Rosalia’s performance. She played the pieces perfectly with not a slip on a slur, trill or flutter! The same would most definitely have to be said for Alan as he ably complemented her on his guitar.  It was a really enjoyable performance. If you have the chance to see either of these musicians play, I would highly recommend it. More information on Alan can be found on his website here, and his weblog can be found here (you can find some examples of Alan’s students work here too)

*My apologies for the lack of accents etc missing on the titles and names, but for some reason wordpress doesn’t like this.

  • Would have loved to have gone to this, but for obvious reasons I couldn’t ;-) I’m also a HUGE fan of John Williams and would love to see him live, too. I want (almost) live blogging of that one!
