Factoid Number 8- One for the Kids!
It has been a while since I have posted a factoid. This particular one was introduced to me by one of my technicians, Sheila Robb. I am a bit of a sucker when it comes to brain
games so as I sat with Sheila at break time she told me what to do, and it is impossible.
So here goes…
How smart is your right foot???
Without anyone watching you (they will think you are off your tree…) and while sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles (it might be easier if you cross your legs, right over left).
Now, while doing this, draw the number “6″ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction! And there’s nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you’ve not already done so!
Though I have an idea, I am not sure of the exact Science behind this. Can anyone elaborate?
I feel an idea for an Advanced Higher Biology Investigation coming on!!

I’ve been practicing circles with my right foot for the last 6 weeks but you’re right - I still can’t stop it changing direction!

What does the fact that I CAN do this mean? I’ve always known i have a weird brain!

Having just attended PIPs training one of the facts that Professor Tymms at Durham Uni shared with us was that research has shown that the part of the brain that is used for counting also controls movement maybe he could explain the foot puzzle also.
By the way any secondary teachers wondering what PIPs is see link below:

Hmm, I was about to do this first time as well… have you had any explanations yet? I’m tempted to get my classes to do this tomorrow to find out what percentage can/cant.
