Glow Learn: Teaching a Class

Yesterday, I used the VLE ‘Glow Learn’ for the first time during its ‘Phase 3’ Trail. Within the ‘Teach a Class’ component, I had enrolled the pupils onto my specific ‘Course’ on ‘Watering Systems’, and I had assigned specific tasks to the pupils. My plan was for the pupils to:
Logon to Glow
Read the objectives of the lesson
With me, they would:
Watch a Hyperlinked MPEG,
Flick through a PowerPoint that covers a number of Learning Outcomes.
They would then:
Browse a number of links and complete a very small online test via the portal.
Print of a PDF worksheet to take always as homework.
The lesson was slightly staggered. This was largely due to us being unfamiliar. There were also one or two minor issues with pupil logons. Other than that, I can say it was a success! The links were clicked and read, the PowerPoint and MPEGs were watched, the tests were completed, the homework was printed and there was even time left for the pupils to play around with their personal space!
I am still working on my own marking and monitoring at present (via the portal that is!). Like any new application, the portal is something that one must become familiar with. Similar to ‘Outlook Express’ and ‘Word’, if you don’t use it frequently, you do forget how to navigate/use it to your full advantage.
However, everything is there and it does work. Today I started to put together our second trial course for the VLE (I don’t know why, but doing this for a second time round was so much easier?!). I/we will use this on Tuesday next week when our RM Educationalist, Paul Smyth comes into observe us. Over the course of the weekend, I will try and write a couple of posts that cover the creation/use of ‘Tests’ and ‘Online Marking’ in more depth.
Other notes of interest that have evolved this week are ‘Glow Messenger’ (I made brief contact with Robin Strain, a fellow Glow, Mentor last night… Liking the smilies
), the ‘Glow Email’ system (Glowboy and I are still experimenting),
and…! and…! and…!
The opportunity to import RSS!!! But Jonsieboy has quite rightly stolen my thunder on that one! All bodes well for EduBuzz, I say
In the meantime, give me a shout if you have any queries or questions

Thanks for keeping us up to date Tess, it all sounds really good so far.
A few quick questions: where was the video you linked to? And, you said in an earlier post that you can easily find other teacher’s resources, how easy is it to use them, and are there any rights protection options for them?

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for your comment. The Video can be found
It is dead easy to find other teachers resources as they should have been ‘tagged’, though there isn’t much up there yet as it is only accessible to piloting schools. It is also very easy to use them. I am not sure what the protection options are for them at present, though I will ask for clarification from RM/LTS.

I had my first shot on the VLE today. It works fine but I am not convinced that teacher’s will pick it up very quickly. Now that RSS and web pages within the page viewer parts have been highlighted we have moved Glow into a different realm! I think that Glow groups and these other elements will occupy the masses for a while to come.
