East Lothian CPD: Using The Web

Yesterday I was asked by Knox Academy to attend a twilight session at Prestonpans Education Centre. The session was held by Ewan McIntosh. Ewan covered three very useful aspects of the web. Rather than go into huge details (I am very short on time right now) you can click on the links below.
Google Cheat Sheet. Enhance you and your pupils’ searches on the web. This sheet should be laminated and placed beside ever computer.
Technorati. Find out where you, your school or anything for that matter has been tagged on the web.
Pageflakes. Use this simple software to create a basic website that automatically updates its self.
I have always been a Netvibes fan when it comes to using RSS (RSS? see this video) and Aggregators to bring news to me. I was really impressed with what Pageflakes can do. I intend to investigate the potential of it, hopefully this weekend.
I would like to thank my PT Ann Chapman for covering my period 6 class yesterday. On behalf of the session’s participants, I would like to thank Ewan for his very informative and logical presentation. I found it particularly relevant to my ongoing involvment with Glow. How did you manage to squeeze so much into an hour?
And it all made sense!

Sounds like a good session. Sorry I missed it now.
Had a look at that PageFlakes, looks nice. But what does it do that iGoogle/Google Personalised homepage doesn’t do? As well as all the preprepared content, there are customisable rss feedreaders too, all without having to leave the warm embrace of google.

Hi Fearghal,
PageFlakes is good for a number of reasons. Top of the list is that its usability is as good as Netvibes or iGoogle. It’s also stable, more stable than Netvibes on school machines whose web browsing experiences can vary
Above all, the guys there are in the process of personalising the interface for eduBuzz, which no-one else is able to do with the speed and price (O) that they have offered. Finally, it is easy with PageFlakes to share your personal homepage, something iGoogle is not designed to do. For us, trying to initiate people to RSS and personalised homepages, this is a great way to do so in small steps.
I hope that answers your question. Do let me know if there’s something that you think we’re missing. Cheers!
