Factiod: What is this?# 5
I have already posed this question to my pupils.
Biology is fascinating. Indeed, this is now my eighth year teaching the subject. The biological world around us never ceases to amaze me. I haven’t posted a factoid for a while, so here goes. Before you look at the image below, I will give you a little story. As you may well be aware, I am a great fan of Volks-Wagon beetles. I own a lovely yellow one; and I am very proud of it. During the recent Easter break, I didn’t need to drive anywhere; therefore the car remained parked in the same spot for around 2 weeks. During the first week of the holiday, I noticed that the rear of the car had been splattered with a sort of sticky brown substance. My first thoughts were that kids had been shaking a can of Coke then spraying my pride and joy! Over the two weeks, this splattering became worse and worse. It wasn’t funny. I was starting to get really annoyed. I was convinced that someone somewhere had it in for me and my bug. As I can see my car from my flat, whenever I heard people outside, I would spy out of the window hoping to catch the culprit.
Last weekend my very good friend Jennie (the girl who helped me set up my first web-page) and I decided to take a road trip to the beach. Jennie and I studied Biology together at University. She is one of these people who can always answer a question and if she doesn’t know the answer, she will know where to find it. She has put me out of my misery. The splattering on my bug was not due to any person. It was actually due to a biological fact.
There is a lesson to be learned here.
Any Guesses?

Were you parked under lime trees?

It does look like tree sap…

Well done gentlemen! It was a sycamore tree that was the culprit! But… What caused it to splatter my beloved bug?

I’m going to guess either:
The tree sap starts to flow at this time of year, and there is excess moisture in the ground to be expelled, or:
Some sort of aphid is secreting waste.
Or, you know, maybe the tree just doesn’t like Volkswagens.

Correct. Some trees will produce excess sap during the budding of their leaves. As the buds start to crack open during the warmer weather, any sap contained within the bud will spit out as such. Sycamore and lime are very bad for this.
Lesson: Keep your car away from such trees during the early spring weeks!
