Alasdair Gordon 18/02/64-04/02/2007

Aly Gordon (better known by the Auggie’s staff as Ali-G) was one of thee most inspirational characters I have ever met during my teaching career. I first met Aly when I was appointed at St Augustine’s RC High School in Edinburgh (2001). Aly was a teacher of Physics and Science. As a young probationer I had much to learn. Aly was a wealth of knowledge and experience. During my time at St Augustine’s Aly helped and supported me with many work related situations. His passion for Science enthused pupils and teachers alike. Much of my Classroom practice today stems from the knowledge that Aly imparted. He was a vibrant and colourful character both in and outwith the classroom.
During staff nights out, Aly and I would always be the last to leave the party, usually ending up with a pizza or a chip supper before he got the night bus home (We always agreed the chips tasted so good!)
Besides being a colleague, Aly was a best mate. He gave me much needed advice when I bought my first flat; he helped put my flat packed furniture together. He took me to my first football match. I am not an avid football follower, but he certainly converted me into a Hibee that day! He helped me through times of hardship and was, too many a time, an ear to bend during times of heartbreak.
In 2003 Aly and I both left St Augustine’s for pastures new. He took a sideways move to West Calder High School whilst I moved onward to Knox Academy. In 2004 Aly and Avril Gordon, were to be the happy new parents of twins; Duncan and Isla. These beautiful pair have inherited much of their Dads’ character; lively vibrant and full of the joys of life.
In early 2006, Aly was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Last weekend, Avril called me with the very sad news that Aly had passed away.
Today was one of the saddest days of my life as we all gathered to pay our last respects to Aly.
“When God is thirsty for colours,
He will choose only the most beautiful flowers first”

(This was us on a staff night out. A Hibs match was on, I can’t quite remember what Aly was about to shout here with his eyes fixed on the screen)

(This was taken last summer after a glorious Hibs victory)
Best Friend, Best Mate, MSN Friend, Skype friend, Teacher, Colleague, Son, Uncle, Devoted Father and Husband.
Aly-G, you are and will be sorely missed.
Thanks for everything.
My thoughts and wishes very much lie with Avril and Aly’s family.

[...] All proceeds from my quiz this year will go to Marie Curie. Earlier this year, my very good friend and former colleague Aly Gordon passed away due to cancer. Marie Curie made his last few days far more comfortable. [...]
