Public Workshop 7 pm 23rd April 2008, Townhouse Supper Room

Townhouse, Haddington

A workshop is being held to explore what we could do as a community to cut our emissions of greenhouse gases and live more sustainably.

Why?

Because there are many ways that people can cut down their own impact on the environment. And there are also things that the Government or Councils can do. But in between, maybe there is a role for communities to come together and find ways that emissions can be cut, and maybe make life better at the same time. Maybe local orchards, maybe car sharing schemes, maybe development of renewable energy or Community Heat and Power. Maybe lots of communities, doing lots of things, will make it easier for the government to take the bull by the horns and take action to avoid the worst effects of global warming.

Because - global warming is scary! The graph below shows current concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, compared with what scientists think were the levels for the last 650,000 years.

Historic CO2 levels 2

Increasing carbon dioxide concentrations in the air causes global warming. The effects of this are not known for sure but are likely to include increased summer temperatures, increased extreme weather such as flooding and high winds, and a decrease in the area of land that can grow food. But the Stern Report, commissioned by the UK Government to look at global warming, says that the worst effects of global warming can be avoided if we act now.

So, why not come along to the Town House Supper Room at 7 pm, Wednesday 23 April 2008 to discuss ideas about what could be done.

Let’s do it! (Before it does us).
