Community Bakery Project
The forthcoming closure of Smith’s the bakers (due to retirement) will be a great loss to the town, so Sustaining Dunbar is looking into the possiblity of opening a community bakery.
If you’d like to join in with planning for this project, please send a blank email to: dunbarcommunitybakery-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Aims of the Enterprise Subgroup
- Encourage community to use local shops and businesses
- Provide information about why this is important in terms economic and social terms.
- Promote activities, events and special offers.
- Encourage local businesses to adopt sustainable approaches
- Provide information about the benefits – eg Crunchy Carrot has saved money on its waste collection charges through reducing quantities to be uplifted
- Awards – local and links with green tourism awards.
- Develop new opportunities
- Social Enterprise – explore possibilities to initiate community projects.
- 3 Harbours Arts Festival– Dunbar is participating this year and one of its main aims is to encourage tourism and promote the High Street through competitions, using window as galleries, activities, advertising.
- Make links with Dunbar Trades Association
- Explore potential eco tourism, street market and promotion of local produce (link with food group)
- Many of these initiatives will require better communication with the community if they are to be successful, however this should be seen as an opportunity to exploit untapped skills and resources within the community
Plugging the Leaks

I wonder if businesses on the High Street might consider opening slightly earlier. Sometimes I drop the children off at the school for 8.45am, and want to head straight for the shops, but then remember that I will have to hang around until 9 o’clock, (or even 10 in some cases), so decide to go home instead.
Often it is only in dropping off and collecting children from activities that brings people into the town, but while they are there they might decide to do a bit of shopping. Perhaps local shops could capitalise on this more…
Hi,
I was wondering if any more Dunbar shops would consider opening on the night of the “Christmas Lights Switch On” next year (23rd Nov 2008). We tend to draw quite a crowd & I think that the shops that are already opening are doing well. I suppose that someone could organise a street-stall or similar too. Just a thought,
Chris Mullender (secretary - Dunbar Christmas Lights).
We will be interested in opening in November. I will also take this forward to the traders meeting and ask if any monies available for say, street entertainment. Sarah Crunchy Carrot
That would be great. The Dunbar Lights Committee can provide the basic switch-on, but we don’t have the time or man-power to make much more of an event of the evening. Having more involvement from the traders could make a big difference.
Dear Community,
I am conducting some market research as part of my business plan for an online store selling environmentally considerate products.
