Transport Group Meeting Notes February 28, 2008

Bus route map. Su’s map is looking good but is proving to be a lot of work. She has been plotting local bus routes and looking for gaps in the timetables, but has now decided to concentrate on the mapping and checking how well the buses meet the trains. We are hoping to produce a large scale map and leaflet to display at the Bike Fest on 21 June, and the to find it a longer term home in the library or a community centre. Morag has been in touch with David Kerr ( d.kerr at easrlothian.gov.uk) at East Lothian Council. Among other things, he co-ordinates the local timetable information for Traveline Scotland and knows a lot about local bus services. Su will contact him regarding the map as it sounds as if he has been undertaking a similar venture, and we don’t want to duplicate work which is being already being done by an professional.
Lesleymay has been assured by Paul McLennan that new bus stops are to be installed on Kellie Place [I noticed today that work has started on some on Lochend Road]
Footpath map. Morag proposed a similar map for walking and cycle paths in the area. A new Spokes East Lothian map is due out soon, so hopefully we can use this as a starting point. It would be useful to have information such as Bus Stops marked on a walking map. It was agreed that walking signposts around the town would also be useful.
Car free day. It was agreed that this sounded like a good idea but we are unsure how to take this further.
Car club. Morag had spoken to Jo McNamara who suggested contacting Changeworks who run Edinburgh Car Club. Changeworks passed on to me another contact (Keith Starkie) in Dunbar, but I’ve not yet followed this up. I was also in touch with Russell Combe who was interested in setting up an environmentally themed business in Dunbar. He felt that a the set-up costs associated with a car-club/car hire company were too great, but will keep an eye out for anyone else who might take this on. Su (Linton Motors) and Lesleymay (J & M Coachworks) have offered to contact local garages who might be able to run a car-hire business on the side, as currently the nearest car-hire place is in Haddington.
